Ocean Lakes Family Campground released a statement Wednesday to correct rumors and misinformation about an active shooter in the park Tuesday night.

Officials said security was investigating a criminal for possession of a stolen bike around 10 p.m. and while being pursued by security and a guest, the criminal ran out of the “P” beach access.

On the beach, the criminal did brandish a handgun from his backpack. Meanwhile, other members of our Security Team cleared the beachfront area,” the campground said on Facebook. “Horry County Police Department responded and arrested the criminal.

Local Resident Star Obser, informed MyrtleBeachSC News, “Hey so I just wanted to tell you about this afternoon. I’m not sure if you are aware but there was an incident in the campground Ocean Lakes yesterday. It led to the arrest of someone who had multiple warrants who had pulled a gun while trying to steal a bicycle.

Today [July 20th] my eight-year-old daughter found a loaded gun behind that wooden sign in the ocean lakes campground playground area. Since we were the ones that found it we had to wait for the police officers and he literally checked the gun in front of me it was completely loaded and even had a bullet in the chamber. They have tacked this incident on to the incident report from last night which is 78628. The identification on the gun is VFv925 it is an 18 mm. Gun was able to hold 25 rounds.

Anyway the suspect is already in custody from yesterday and the gun was being taken for forensics, at this point it is believed that was the gun from last night. The officer did share that they had released dogs for over two hours in an attempt to locate the weapon last night but were unable to.”
