CCU shined in its opener against Jacksonville State last night. The performance can only be defined as dominant.
Ethan Vasko was chosen as the starting quarterback for CCU, despite initial uncertainties. He delivered an impressive performance, throwing for 249 yards and two touchdowns. Additionally, CCU had a strong ground game, with Ja’Vin Simpkins leading the way with 80 yards on 12 carries, and Braydon Bennett contributing 60 yards on 11 carries along with two touchdowns.
After the Chants allowed a tying field goal due to a fumble, Vasko found Tray Taylor for a 36-yard touchdown, giving them a 10-3 lead. The game went downhill for Jacksonville State from there.

Coastal had the opportunity to include their high-profile transfer quarterback, Noah Kim from Michigan State, in the late stages of the game. Kim successfully led a touchdown drive, connecting with Senika McKie for the Chants’ final score. In the last drive, the Gamecocks made progress with Tre Stewart’s 38-yard touchdown run.
The defense’s performance in the first game can only be described as exceptional. Tim Beck, the head coach of CCU, gained recognition for his defensive expertise during his tenure at N.C. State.
Head Coach Tim Beck, with 35 years of experience, was appointed as Coastal Carolina’s fourth head football coach on December 4, 2022. Beck joined CCU with 18 years of coaching in Power 5 conferences, having served as an offensive coordinator at Nebraska, Ohio State, Texas, and NC State for the past 12 years.
The Chants will compete against William & Mary in their first home game on September 7th at 7 p.m.
