Your home should be a safe place for you to retreat to every day, but unfortunately when a burglar breaks into your home this can have long lasting psychological effects as well as having to deal with any insurance paperwork and buying new items. So knowing how to deal with this situation can be useful.

Call The Cops

As soon as you notice that something is not quite right and an intruder has been inside your home, it is best to call the cops immediately. You do not know for sure whether the intruder is still around so you want to keep yourself safe until the cops arrive to investigate the scene and gather any necessary evidence.

Notify Your Insurance Company

It is ideal to ring your insurance company as soon as possible so you can notify them of any personal possessions that have been stolen. This will be necessary so that you can file an insurance claim.

Professional Cleaning Service

Once you are able to clean up your home, after the cops have gathered all their required evidence, it will be worthwhile looking into how trauma cleanup companies can clear up the scene in a professional and dignified manner. This will help to prevent you from having to clean up the scene yourself.

Change The Locks

It is advisable to change the locks of your home in case the intruder left with any spare keys you had lying around indoors. It may help you to feel a bit more relaxed knowing that you have updated all the locks too.

Try Not to Spend Time Alone

It might be a good idea to spend time with friends or family for a little bit to help you process the trauma of the burglary. This will be particularly important if you live alone as you might be feeling quite anxious and unsettled about being in your home alone, immediately after the break in has occurred.

Install Security Features

To help you feel more safe and secure after the break-in it will be worth installing a security camera and burglar alarm to enhance the security features of your home. This may help you to feel a bit more relaxed and secure.

Psychological Counselling
The most difficult part about dealing with the aftermath of a break in will be the psychological aspect. You might find that you struggle to sleep properly the first few nights after the incident occured. It may be useful to get in contact with a counsellor who can provide you with various techniques to help you deal with the stress and anxiety that the incident has caused. Your mental welfare is an important part of your overall health so looking after this will be very important.
