As a society, we’re more aware of germs than ever. The COVID pandemic has made us even more aware of the dangers of viruses and germs that could potentially be lurking anywhere.

So when you clean your house, how do you make sure it looks more than just clean but is hygienically clean too?

Call in the professionals

Many cleaning companies are now offering specialist services designed to disinfect your entire home. Perfect if you have a large property or just don’t have the time to do it yourself. They will have equipment such as electric floor scrubbers and UV cleaners which you may not have access to otherwise.

Learn about food hygiene

It’s important to prepare, cook and store food safely in order to keep healthy. The kitchen can be a source of many forms of bacteria. Always clean your surfaces thoroughly with an antibacterial cleaner and ensure that you prepare raw meat and fish separately from other foods. Wash your hands, chopping board, and other utensils thoroughly before touching anything else.

As well as surfaces, other areas of contamination are often things like light switches, cupboard handles, and your taps and sink.

Spend longer in the bathroom

And not in the bath. The bathroom is usually one of the dirtiest places in your home when it comes to bacteria you can’t see. You might think that’s because the toilet is in there, but that’s not always the case. In many homes, the basin can carry more germs than the toilet.

Because your bathroom is warm and humid, it’s the perfect place for bacteria to thrive. Sometimes, this can be seen in the form of mold and mildew, but the majority of it is invisible and grows on the surfaces. When cleaning your bathroom, be thorough, wiping down all surfaces, tape, and handles.

If you use washcloths or sponges, be sure to wring them out and let them dry thoroughly as they are usually covered in bacteria.

Don’t forget bathmats and towels too. Swap them over for clean ones regularly and wash at a hot enough temperature to kills germs.

One of the simplest ways to reduce the number of germs in your bathroom is to put the toilet seat down before you flush it. Every time you flush the toilet with the seat up, germs are pushed into the air and land on everything.

Don’t forget fabrics

Fabrics also harbor germs, so need to be cleaned regularly, which isn’t always the easiest. Things that can be watched in the machine should be and other fabrics that can’t be, such as carpets or sofas, can be professionally steam cleaned to remove dirt and germs.

Takeaways

Some people love cleaning, others find it a necessary chore. One thing’s for sure, we have to do it if we want our homes to be healthy. By practicing good hygiene habits and cleaning effectively, we can reduce the number of harmful bacteria in our home which can cause a range of illnesses.
