Yesterday, Jay Baldwin publicly announced his plan to run for Mayor of North Myrtle Beach.
By a significant margin, Jay Baldwin is the top contender to secure the seat in the upcoming November election.
Jay Baldwin’s Vision for North Myrtle Beach
North Myrtle Beach Mayor Marilyn Hatley announced last month that she will not run for re-election.
Under her guidance, with Jay Baldwin in the role of Mayor Pro Tem, the City of North Myrtle Beach overtook the City of Myrtle Beach as the top tourism destination on the Grand Strand.
A mayor pro tem is a council member chosen to act as mayor in the mayor’s absence. This person, also called the mayor pro tempore, is usually elected by the city council from its members.
Jay Baldwin is widely regarded as a prominent member of the council who has been involved in the city’s events for several decades.
Mike Mahaney, a disgraced former North Myrtle Beach City Manager, has declared his candidacy as well.
As the election day of Tuesday, Nov. 4, nears, the competition for the mayor’s seat intensifies. Mike Mahaney, the former city manager who served for 14 years before being removed from the role, declared his intention to run for mayor in January. Baldwin declined to provide any thoughts on Mahaney’s mayoral candidacy.
