Jose Ibarra statement

Northwest Georgia (November 20th, 2024) –  Today, State Senator Colton Moore issues a statement following the guilty verdict of Jose Ibarra, the Venezuelan national who brutally murdered 22-year-old nursing student Laken Riley during a morning jog on the University of Georgia campus:
“Today,  Jose Ibarra was found guilty of the heinous murder of 22-year-old nursing student Laken Riley. However, the fact that this monster was allowed to roam freely in our country, preying on innocent lives, is a direct result of our broken immigration system and failed leadership at the federal level.

Ibarra is not just a murderer — he is a vile, despicable predator who illegally crossed our southern border. From the moment he entered our nation unlawfully, he showed no regard for our laws, our people, or our values. His cowardly attack on Laken Riley, a young woman with a bright future, was 100% preventable.

Jose Ibarra was arrested in New York City for endangering a child and violating motor vehicle laws, yet he was released without ICE being given the opportunity to detain and deport him. Even after illegally crossing the border and getting arrested, he and his roommate were rewarded with a taxpayer-funded flight to Georgia.

The District Attorney should have sought out the death penalty. This crime was premeditated, brutal, and committed without an ounce of humanity.

Let me be clear: illegal immigrants who commit crimes must be deported immediately. No excuses, no delays. It is unconscionable to allow dangerous individuals like Ibarra to remain in this country, putting more American lives at risk.

I will continue to fight for Georgia families and ensure that criminals like Jose Ibarra are never given the opportunity to harm another innocent life. It’s time to enforce our immigration laws, secure our borders, and demand accountability from those entrusted to protect us.

After sentencing Colton Moore called out Judge for not issuing the death penalty

Northwest Georgia (November 20th, 2024) –  Today, State Senator Colton Moore issues a statement condemning the decision by District Attorney Deborah Gonzalez to forego seeking the death penalty for Jose Ibarra, the convicted murderer of 22-year-old nursing student Laken Riley:“Today,  we mourn not only the tragic and senseless loss of a young woman with a bright future, but also the failure of our justice system to deliver the punishment that Jose Ibarra so clearly deserves.

Laken Riley’s brutal murder was a crime so savage, so inhumane, and so deliberate that it cries out for the harshest penalty available under Georgia law — the death penalty.

District Attorney Deborah Gonzalez is a Soros-funded corrupt Democrat who let her radical political agenda stand in the way of justice. By refusing to seek the death penalty, she denied Laken’s family, friends, and community the full measure of justice they deserve. It is unconscionable that Gonzalez prioritized her campaign promise to abolish capital punishment over the duty to hold the perpetrator of this monstrous act accountable to the fullest extent of the law.

Jose Ibarra went out hunting for victims, murdered Laken Riley in cold blood, and denied her family the chance to say goodbye to their beloved daughter, sister, and friend. Yet, instead of pursuing the death penalty, Gonzalez settled for a life sentence that leaves Georgia taxpayers footing the bill to house and feed this criminal for the rest of his days. This is not justice. This is a betrayal.”
