With the bulk of the winter out of the way, it is not too early to start dreaming of those long, warm sunny days. While it might seem hard to remember off the back of winter there are days where even the most welcome summer sun can get too much and you are searching round to cool you are your house down to more manageable levels. To help prepare you for those blistering summer days here are some ways you can help keep yourself and your home cool this summer.

Close your blinds and curtains

While you may want to let the light flood through your windows to brighten your home, on those really hot days the heat is flooding through also. If you want to significantly cool your home keep your curtains and blinds closed during the day as this will help to shield your home from the scorching summer sun.

Check your air conditioning unit

Before the summer comes be sure to check on your HVAC system to ensure it is in full working order. It might be that it could benefit from a service or repairs to ensure maximum efficiency throughout the summer. Don’t delay undertaking any work that needs to be done and call on professionals such as Air Temperature Control to ensure you have access to cool air this summer.

Regular maintenance and servicing will not only prolong the lifespan of your HVAC system but also help you avoid costly repairs later on. It might be that it could benefit from this AC repair service to ensure maximum efficiency throughout the summer.

Mindful clothing

The way you dress can be a great tool to help keep you cool in the summer. Choose fabrics such as cotton as they are breathable and will help keep your body temperature cool. Cotton is also a great material for your bed set as this will help keep you cool during hot nights. Be sure to wear light and lose clothing where possible but don’t forget to keep your skin protected from the harmful rays.

Stay hydrated

With rising temperatures, your required fluid intake rises also. The hot weather will cause you to sweat to help keep the body cool, as such you will be losing more fluid than you would in cooler temperatures. It is essential that this fluid is replaced. Drinking cool icy drinks will not only help to keep you hydrated but will also help to cool you down. Avoid drinks that are considered to be diuretic such as alcohol and coffee as these have dehydrating effects making it harder to stay hydrated.

Avoid the sun between 11 am and 2 pm

The sun is at its highest point in the sky between these hours and has the most damaging effect. UV exposure during this time can be dangerous and the heat itself is at its strongest making it harder for you to keep cool. The best course of action is to avoid being in direct sunlight during these hours. Find yourself some shade and keep cool. If being in the sun in these times is unavoidable be sure to take sensible precautions such as wearing a sun hat, sunblock, sunglasses, and appropriate clothing.
