Insights from Cathy Weis on Local Accountability

I am writing to express my concern and disappointment regarding your recent use of the word “disgraced” when referring to Mike Mahaney on MyrtleBeachSC.com.

This term carries a deeply damaging and inflammatory connotation, one that implies shameful or unethical conduct. To use such a descriptor without clearly substantiated justification not only undermines journalistic standards of fairness and objectivity, but it also casts a shadow on a public servant whose long-standing record and reputation in our community deserves respect—even in disagreement.

Public figures, especially those engaged in local politics, should certainly be held accountable. But accountability should not come at the cost of accuracy or civility. Language matters. Your choice of words shapes public perception and carries real consequences for the individuals involved, as well as for the integrity of your publication.

I respectfully urge you to reconsider the tone and wording used in your coverage. The residents of North Myrtle Beach deserve reporting that informs, not incites.

Sincerely,

A NMB Citizen
