Residentsrights.org, that you are invited to join, is not proposing any change to the other 20% that

goes to reduce property taxes and for capital improvements to the city.

What has happened lately with this tax in the legislature, and is it too late to change the law?

Behind our backs, and not reported on by the mainstream media, the legislature has quietly passed

legislation in the Senate, with 100% approval, to “reinstate” the tax as written. And the law does not

even expire until 2019! Senators Rankin, Cleary, and Hembree introduced the bill reinstating the law

this past February, just over three years in advance of its expiration!

I spoke to Senator Ray Cleary on the telephone recently and was told the Senate added a

referendum requirement. The Sun News’ research resulted in their editorial board saying “Both the

state House and Senate have passed bills allowing the 1 percent Myrtle Beach sales tax to be

reimposed without a referendum. The bills are expected to be finalized within the month.” They make

it sound like a done deal. But it is not.

There is conflict in what Cleary and The Sun News are saying regarding the referendum requirement.

Cleary said it is in the House’s Ways and Means committee. From my internet research I found this to

be the case. We need it to die in this committee so it is not voted on by the House by the adjournment  date of June 2nd. If they vote on it, it will pass, which we do not want, either with or without a referendum requirement.

More information about what we do need to happen will be written at a later date.

A House member told me it can be pulled out of that committee and voted on. So here is how you, a

real person possessing voting power, can help. Call all the committee members below and indicate there is conflicting information regarding the verbiage in the Tourism Development Tax for HorryCounty and that many of us in the county, including you, want it stopped in committee. That we do not  want it passed.

The legislature is not slated to go back to work until Tuesday, so please pick up the phone to

call them at their homes or offices where they live before they go back.

Or, if by chance, you know a House member who will listen, ask him/her to amend the House version

to say the 80% goes to residents and not the chamber. Cleary said that will never pass when it is sent

back to the Senate, but at least it will be stopped for now.

Are you going to let the legislators and Chamber get away with this or are you picking up your phone

right now?
