With just over 2 peak Summer weeks remaining, is the Myrtle Beach curfew working?

The Myrtle Beach curfew has now been in effect for several weeks. From April 26th to July 4th, the City of Myrtle Beach experienced a rash of downtown teen shootings with multiple deaths.

Myrtle Beach’s top tourist feeder state is North Carolina. State law in North Carolina requires the school year to start closest to August 26th and end closest to June 11th. School start dates vary by district but generally fall in late August or early September for most public schools in North Carolina.

For example, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) begins classes on Monday, August 28th, according to Queen City NewsLincoln County Schools begins classes on August 13th. Alamance-Burlington School System starts on August 25th. Durham Public Schools has the first day of school for traditional calendar students on August 25th.

In America, families usually spend the week before school starts shopping for supplies, signing up kids for sports teams, and getting ready for the new school year.

Myrtle Beach has just 17 peak days of summer in addition to the Labor Day weekend, considering that certain schools begin classes as soon as August 13th.

The Myrtle Beach curfew appears to be helping. The city reports no teenage shootings since the Myrtle Beach curfew was implemented, just after the July 4th holiday.

Myrtle Beach Curfew: An Impact on Summer Tourism

According to merchants interviewed by MyrtleBeachSC News, business is expected to be down by at least 20% this summer. Many are hoping for a large crowd during Labor Day weekend.
