Myrtle Beach homeless camps have plagued downtown. City has 1 new solution

The downtown area has been plagued by Myrtle Beach homeless camps for over 30 years. The City of Myrtle Beach is actively implementing fresh strategies to address the issue of problematic areas and homeless camps.

The city has announced its intention to implement a novel system for tracking nuisance locations caused by Myrtle Beach homeless camps. According to Assistant City Manager Josh Bruegger, this system is designed to enhance internal communication among city staff.

Multiple city departments often become involved when leaders address Myrtle Beach homeless camps or nuisance properties, as he reiterated on several occasions.

Bruegger expressed the city’s aspiration for the system to effectively address potential oversights, acknowledging the challenging nature of resolving such issues quickly.

โ€œItโ€™s balancing compassion, but also people living in the community around those encampments also have a right to live in a place that doesnโ€™t have nuisance type activity occurring on the property,โ€ he said.

The system functions like an interactive map, but only authorized personnel employed by the city and the Myrtle Beach Police Department can use it.

Kate Curan has been actively engaged in offering assistance and aid to the homeless population in Myrtle Beach for over ten years.

She expressed her desire for the system to be utilized in order to specifically address issues such as narcotics, firearms, and various forms of violent offenses.

A Myrtle Beach homeless man was chopped to death near Joe White avenue earlier this year.

Myrtle Beach officials are currently in the testing phase of the system and have not determined the Myrtle Beach homeless camps system launch date. The system is not intended for public use.
