When we are in our 20s and sometimes long into our 30s, we might not notice the tiny fine lines that are getting deeper over time. Most people will have some wrinkles, but how deep they are, when they get them, and how easy they are to tend to will depend a lot on lifestyle and genetics.

Some people are lucky and can barely have a crow’s foot, never mind deep-set crow’s feet.

What are wrinkles?

Wrinkles are little folds that appear on the skin over time. Some appear when we make common facial expressions like frowning, smiling, or laughing. Others are a cause of a lot of sun damage.

Did you know that the real name for wrinkles is rhytide?

Most wrinkles are entirely natural and occur as our body gets lower in collagen. Even how we sleep can cause particular wrinkles on our faces (get a silk pillow!).

Why do wrinkles form?

As we get older, wrinkles become more prominent because our skin becomes less elastic and drier. Some lifestyle factors like drinking, smoking, tanning, and not applying sunscreen or moisturizer can cause your skin to show signs of aging faster.

Wrinkles are a common and natural part of life, but if you aren’t ready to let them become deep-set, there are lots of things you can do to help minimize them.

So, what non-surgical options do you have?

Microneedling

Microneedling is often referred to as college induction therapy. Using tiny needles, the skin is punctured repeatedly. This encourages the skin to heal itself and, in doing so, gives a noticeable boost of collagen.

This treatment is commonly recommended for acne scarring, enlarged pores, rough skin, and hyperpigmentation.

Before any needles puncture your skin, you will have a small layer of anesthetic applied to the skin, and a roller will carefully roll over the skin.

Microneedling can be done at home, but it is easy to get it wrong, so only getting it from a trusted expert is your best course of action.

Plasma pen

Plasma pen treatment is quickly rising in popularity because the results are noticeable, and the procedure is comfortable too. A plasma pen emits small plasma discharges that cause the skin to contract and offers thermal distribution in the dermis.

For the next few months, collagen will be more present in the skin, resulting in a more youthful appearance. Since the tip of the plasma pen is highly accurate, it can be done on small skin areas like the eyelids.

Peels

Suppose you have had an at-home peel; you know some of the processes of a chemical peel. However, those available in at-home kits vs. those done by professionals are very different. A chemical peel done by a professional will have a chemical concoction mixed to meet the needs of your skin rather than a standard option.

A chemical peel removes the top layer of the skin alongside dead skin cells. The skin underneath is smooth, with fewer wrinkles, and bright. Some chemical peels are very gentle, and while they do have some effects, the stronger the chemical peel, the better the results.

Different acids will give different results, and they will also have varying benefits.

As an added bonus, you will see a reduction in age spots, acne, and enlarged pores.

Retinoids

Unfortunately, most people use retinoids wrong or do not have the correct strength for what they are trying to achieve. Retinoids are known as the gold standard when it comes to packing a punch when it comes to wrinkles.

Retinoids stimulate our cell turnover, and that increases collagen production. It is the collagen production that starts to reduce the look of fine lines and wrinkles.

What makes retinoids a must for every bathroom shelf is that they improve skin texture and give you fresher-looking skin.

Unlike some of the other treatments, retinoids take a while before they work. Most people will stop using them when they see a slight improvement, but really it needs to stay in your routine forever.

Retinoids are very potent, so you need to choose carefully. Due to that potency, many people get itchy, redness, some sensitivity, and purging. So when you first introduce any retinoids into your routine, you will start with a low % and a small amount. Use perhaps once a week, maybe twice, until you build up to daily usage.

When you use retinoids, you should use them at night, followed by a high-quality moisturizer.

Although you should always use sunscreen, if you have been skipping it until now, you need to add it to your routine when you use retinoids. Retinoids do make your skin more sensitive to the sun and more prone to damage and burning.

Keep in mind it can take about six months to see the full impact of your efforts, so stick with it.

Vitamin C

If you aren’t ready to use retinoids, then vitamin C can be a great starting place. There are many skin care products that have vitamin C in them, but choosing a vitamin C, only serum, can have a better effect.

Vitamin C in serum form has a superpower and can neutralize free radicals, boost collagen, and is a potent antioxidant.

All of the features combined mean you are going to see a reduction in how prominent the wrinkles are. Many people like how vitamin C brightens their skin, reduces redness and acne scarring, and helps with hyperpigmentation too.

For vitamin C to really make a difference, you need to have a product that contains ascorbic acid at 15%. 15% might seem a lot, but this is when it is most effective. Only purchase serums or liquid forms that are in a wrapped or dark bottle so that you don’t have any oxidation.

Like the retinoids, you should start slowly with vitamin C because it is pretty strong.
