Today, the North Myrtle Beach City Council made the decision to place Mike Mahaney, the North Myrtle Beach City Manager, on administrative leave with pay.
The council also approved a notice of removal for Mahaney before placing him on leave. That resolution states the council โexpressed their desire that the city exercise its right to end the cityโs employment relationship with North Myrtle Beach City Manager Mike Mahaney.โ
The council sanctioned a notice of termination for Mahaney and subsequently placed him on administrative leave. The resolution explicitly articulates the council’s wish for the city to exercise its authority in terminating City Manager Mike Mahaney’s employment.

According to insiders, MyrtleBeachSC News has learned that City Council possesses the required votes to terminate Mahaney’s employment, and they plan to carry out this action tomorrow.
Despite receiving multiple requests from City Council members in February, Mahaney did not actively pursue the hiring of a Grand Coordinator, as stated in the documents presented during Thursday’s meeting.
That act, however, is one of a myriad of issues North Myrtle Beach City Council has experienced in working with the North Myrtle Beach City Manager. Mahaney has become a source of embarrassment for the city getting into public lawsuits with business owners.
Buoys restaurant’s lawsuit proved to be highly embarrassing for the City as it demonstrated the continuous harassment of the oceanfront eatery by the City Manager of North Myrtle Beach amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. The City ended up losing the lawsuit.
The North Myrtle Beach Police Department requested the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division to investigate Michael Mahaney, the City Manager of North Myrtle Beach, for an alleged assault in 2022. Michael Mahaney, the North Myrtle Beach City Manager, faced allegations of intimidating and physically touching Laura Weaver, a local businesswoman who co-owned Glass Bottom Kayak Tours.
At a city event, Mahaney was observed donning a body camera, causing confusion among government officials who were unable to provide any explanation for his actions.
Today’s resolution further asserts that despite continuous attempts made by certain city council members to negotiate with the North Myrtle Beach city manager for a respectable departure agreement, these efforts did not yield positive results.
Mahaney is given a period of five days from the delivery of the removal notice to him, as stated in the resolution, to submit a written request for a public hearing.
Mahaney told local news he would appeal this removal.
