Georgetown S.C. Senator Stephen Goldfinch is proposing a “Yankee Tax” for all Northerners moving to South Carolina.

The fee would be $500 in total for moving to S.C. If passed by state referendum, new residents moving from out-of-state to South Carolina would be required to pay two one-time fees, $250 for new driver’s licenses and $250 for vehicle registrations.

“[South Carolina] Folks are losing their quality of life,” says Goldfinch. “I am sure some people would say tax them more.

Goldfinch is up for re-election in the 2024 June primaries.

Goldfinch is represented by political consultant Walter Whetsell.

The fee referendum will be available for debate on the South Carolina Senate floor next week.

If the bill passes, counties state-wide will vote on it as a referendum in the Fall general elections of 2024.

Horry County and Georgetown County currently grow at a rate of 24% new residents annually.
