In November 2020, S.C. voters stepped up to the plate giving Republicans a large majority in the S.C. Senate.

The Republicans have an almost 2 to 1 majority in the S.C. Senate.

Yet on the HeartBeat Bill, Senate Majority Leader Shane Massey today added a bevvy of exceptions which all but dismantled the bill.

Massey represents Aiken, Edgefield, Lexington, McCormick & Saluda Counties.

The four exceptions Massey added to the ban include: in the case of rape, incest, a fetal anomaly, or if the mother’s life is threatened by her pregnancy.

The mother’s life exception is ambiguous at best and left to a wide array of interpretations.

The bill is expected to pass the General Assembly, with these exceptions in place, and then be signed by S.C. Governor McMaster.

The bill, however, is a pro-life bill in name only.

Representative Magnuson stated he would not call this bill a “pro-choice” bill. He did post the following on Facebook related to the exceptions.
