Myrtle Beach City Council will meet in executive session today to discuss whether to allow the Sheraton Hotel group to take over management of the city owned Myrtle Beach Convention Center.

The 250,000 sq. ft convention center is one of the largest on the East Coast and can accommodate more than 80 percent of all conventions and trade shows held in the U.S. The 402-room Sheraton Hotel is adjacent at the location on 2101 North Oak St.

It’s true. On June 22, 1978 the Rolling Stones performed at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center. Recent renovations, completed early 2017, include a remodeled front entrance.

The Myrtle Beach Convention Center operates at about 69% occupancy, making it one of the most successful in the industry. Convention visitors, like Showstoppers – whose vendors use the facility, most often stay off property at hotels up and down the Grand Strand.

Small hotel owners are concerned that, should the Sheraton take over management, a disproportionate amount of convention attendees will be required to stay at the hotel onsite.
