From the Dias of the S.C. House, Republican Speaker Jay Lucas announced his retirement today.
This makes two key retirements in just one week. Last week, House Majority Leader Gary Simrill, R-York, informed the House of his decision to retire after 30 years in elected office.
Jay Lucas has been the Speaker of the South Carolina House of Representatives since 2013. He is also a practicing attorney, a former prosecutor, and a member of the South Carolina House Judiciary Committee.
Jay Lucas was born in Charleston, South Carolina on March 27th, 1966 to James and Mary Lucas. He attended The Citadel in Charleston from 1984-1988 where he graduated with a degree in Political Science and received his commission as an officer in the United States Army Reserve Officer Training Corps. He then attended The University of Georgia School of Law where he graduated with honors and was awarded membership into Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity. He served as an Assistant Solicitor for the 5th Circuit Solicitor’s Office from 1990-1993 before opening his own law firm that specialized in criminal defense work.
