The Town Manager of Surfside Beach lifted the Stop Work order for the pier project today.

A Stop Work order remains for the three buildings at the entrance of the pier. Sources tell MyrtleBeachSC News this order will also be lifted as soon as possible.

This after an anonymous tip was called into the Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation (LLR) questioning the credentials of Consensus Construction and Intercoastal Marine.

For the record, the Surfside Beach Pier weathered Hurricane Ian with little to no damage. This after 4 other area piers were decimated by the storm’s waves.

Surfside Beach’s engineering excellence made national news after the Hurricane passed.

LLR does not reveal the names, nor the identities, of persons who call in anonymous tips. However, the $18 million pier will be the marquee landmark for the town. The resulting stop work order is likely to cost the town tens of millions of dollars.

Several high schools in Horry County have recently been closed from hoax calls made by anonymous sources. These sources can face jail time for making such calls. The same does not hold true for anonymous tips sent into LLR.

The stop work order controvery questions why miscommunications among the town’s staff exist and continue to exist.

On Sunday, October 23rd, MyrtleBeachSC News will be writing an opinion piece on why a town-wide forensic audit is necessary for Surfside Beach. We believe such an audit will help the Town Manager sort through whom among his staff he can trust with high level decision making on issues like those surrounding the Surfside Beach pier.
