If you have heard the terms hard and soft water but never really knew the difference switching to soft water could make, then read on!

Hard water and soft water describe the mineral content of water. And as you can imagine, there is a big difference between the two.

If you’ve ever been on holiday and had a glass of water and said this tastes a little bit different, then you have already experienced some of the differences between hard and soft water.

What’s in your water impacts your life and your home.

People with hard water often choose to have a water softener fitted, as the difference is incredible.

Plumbing and home

Having a water softener fitted in your home is an excellent idea for your plumbing system, as it reduces the number of harsh chemicals that can often impact your plumbing system.

Hard water tends to strain your plumbing system, so having a water softener fitted can change this.

Your plumbing system works hard, and facilitating hard water all day; every day is a challenge for your plumbing. The harsh materials within the hard water can impact your fixtures pipes and eventually shorten their lifespan.

If you often deal with clogged pipes and toilets, this is a sign that you have hard water. You’ll notice a big difference when you swap to soft water. These problems are caused by a build-up of calcium inside the pipes.

It makes sense that hard water impacts other appliances, including your washing machine, your coffee makers, and your dishwasher.

You can improve the performance and the lifespan of all of this by switching to soft water.

Skin and hair

Unsurprisingly,  the chemicals in hard water cause our skin and hair to dry out. The continued use of hard water showers will add up over time, and you might notice that your hair and skin begin to look a little bit dull.

Will you get used to this? Yes, over time. But a simple solution is to have a water softener fitted. You’ll notice the difference very quickly. And again, just like when you’re on holiday in a soft water area, you’ll feel the difference in your hair and skin after just one shower.

Cleaning

When you clean and use a lot of water, but you are using hard water, technically, you’re using water that is quite chock-full with minerals and other chemicals. While you will be able to get your house clean, the results are often less effective.

Hard water areas are more prone to soap scum.

Hard water is untreated, raw, mineral-rich water that has made its way through the stone, calcium deposits, mineral pockets and more before it comes to us in our taps.

Most people do prefer to make the switch to softer water and see the results immediately.
