Horry County didn’t want Darline Graham Nordone on August 11. She finished with roughly a third of the vote statewide, and the overwhelming majority of Horry County ballots went to someone else.
Now the cavalry is coming.
President Donald Trump — who endorsed Darline Graham before the primary, asked her to run, and headlined a call-in rally for her the night before polls opened — is expected in South Carolina this Friday to campaign for her in person. That’s an escalation, not a debut. When a Trump-endorsed candidate can’t clear 50 percent against a nine-opponent field, the endorsement gets delivered in person the second time.
Friday also happens to be the night Horry County high schools open their football season. Whoever scheduled that made a choice about which crowd matters.

The money nobody’s talking about
Two super PACs — Palmetto Action and Security is Strength PAC — spent more than $1.2 million backing Darline Graham in the primary. Spending by Norman’s allies came in under $50,000. That’s better than a 24-to-1 advantage, and it still produced a runoff.
Against that, a group calling itself “Stormin the Coast for Norman” has been organizing locally for Ralph Norman. And a Faith, Family and Freedom rally for Norman is set for August 23 in Horry County — two days before the runoff.

What voters are actually weighing
Darline Graham was a private citizen five weeks ago. Gov. Henry McMaster appointed her on July 14 to finish the term of her brother, the late Sen. Lindsey Graham, who died July 11. She was widely understood at the time to be a placeholder.
She isn’t running as one now. She’s asking for a full six-year term — through January 2033. President Trump leaves office in January 2029. That means four years of the term she’s seeking would be served with no Trump in the White House, and voters here get exactly one look at how she votes before that happens.
So far that record is thin and inherited: a vote to confirm Attorney General Todd Blanche, and a vote for the Russian oil and gas sanctions bill her brother championed. She has also retained her brother’s longtime staff.
That last part is what has some Grand Strand Republicans uneasy. Lindsey Graham spent two decades as one of the Senate’s most reliable interventionists — pushing Ukraine funding and pressing hard for escalation with Iran. Voters who spent years frustrated with that record are now being asked to hand the seat to his sister, staffed by his people.
Norman is running on the contrast. A House Freedom Caucus member since 2017, endorsed by Sens. Mike Lee and Rick Scott, he’s making the case that voters want a record they can check rather than a name they recognize.
