Artificial General Intelligence: What Is AGI? Will We Reach It by 2027?

Understanding what is AGI will be crucial as we move forward in technology.

Silicon Valley’s biggest names say a machine that thinks like a human is just around the corner. The rest of the world — including the researchers who actually build this technology — is not so sure. The gap between the hype and the reality matters, because if even half of what’s being promised comes true, the effects will reach every industry in Horry County, from hospitality to healthcare to the construction trades.

**Artificial general intelligence, or AGI, refers to a hypothetical AI system that can match or surpass human cognitive abilities across virtually every task** — not just one narrow skill like writing code or generating images. Today’s AI tools, including ChatGPT, Claude, and Google’s Gemini, can hold conversations, solve graduate-level math, and produce realistic video. But according to the International AI Safety Report released in 2026, they still hallucinate facts, fail at multi-step reasoning, cannot learn from experience the way a four-year-old can, and have no real understanding of the physical world.

AGI would be different. It would learn, reason, and adapt across any domain without being retrained. That is the promise. Whether it arrives in 18 months or 18 years depends on who you ask — and what they stand to gain from the answer.

## Nobody Can Even Agree on What It Means

The first problem with predicting AGI is that nobody has settled on a definition.

To grasp the implications of future advancements, it is essential to explore what is AGI and its potential transformations in various sectors.

OpenAI defined AGI in its 2018 charter as “highly autonomous systems that outperform humans at most economically valuable work.” Google DeepMind published a framework that measures AGI across 10 cognitive faculties — perception, reasoning, memory, learning, attention, and social cognition among them — requiring a system to match a median human adult across all of them.

Then there is the money definition. According to The Information, the contract between Microsoft and OpenAI reportedly defines AGI as technology generating $100 billion in profits. Under that standard, AGI is less a scientific breakthrough than a financial milestone.

Practical benchmarks tell a more grounded story. GPT-5 scored just 58 percent on the Hendrycks-Bengio metric that measures the cognitive versatility of a well-educated adult, according to Fortune. Francois Chollet, creator of the ARC-AGI benchmark, argues intelligence should be measured by how efficiently a system can learn new skills — not by how much existing knowledge it can retrieve. By that standard, current AI is nowhere close.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang declared on the Lex Fridman podcast in March 2026 that “AGI has already been achieved.” He hedged almost immediately, noting that no AI could replicate the complexity of running Nvidia’s business. When the definition shifts depending on who is selling what, the audience should pay attention to the fine print.

## The Boosters Say 2027. The Skeptics Say Not So Fast.

The loudest voices pushing a 2027 timeline have something in common: they run companies that profit directly from the belief that AGI is imminent.

Sam Altman, OpenAI’s CEO, predicted AGI in “a few thousand days” — roughly 2027. He told Bloomberg it could happen “during Trump’s term,” through 2028, and has laid out a progression: AI agents doing cognitive work by 2025, systems generating novel insights by 2026, and robots performing real-world tasks by 2027. Dario Amodei, the CEO of Anthropic, expressed “strong confidence” at the 2026 World Economic Forum that AGI will arrive within a few years, possibly sooner. Elon Musk estimated three to six years.

The AI 2027 project, led by former OpenAI researcher Daniel Kokotajlo and built on tabletop exercises with 100-plus experts, predicts superhuman AI researcher capabilities by September 2027 and artificial superintelligence by December of the same year.

The money behind these predictions is real. The Stargate project represents $500 billion in planned infrastructure spending over four years. Meta alone plans to spend $60 to $65 billion in 2025.

The skeptics have data on their side. Demis Hassabis, the founder of Google DeepMind, puts the odds at 50 percent by the end of the decade — 2030, not 2027. Gary Marcus, an AI researcher and longtime critic of AGI hype, has called a 2027 timeline implausible. His most optimistic case is 2030, which he does not consider very likely.

The numbers agree. Polymarket, a prediction market where people bet real money on outcomes, prices the probability of AGI by 2027 under 20 percent. A survey of more than 2,700 AI researchers found only a 10 percent chance that systems surpass humans in most tasks by 2027. The median prediction among those researchers shifted from 2060 in 2020 to the mid-2030s now — a dramatic acceleration, but still not the timeline Silicon Valley is selling.

Raphael Milliere, an Oxford researcher, put it simply: “The historical record is littered with confident predictions that turned out to be mistaken.” Charlie Guo of Ignorance.ai was more blunt: “I have a hard time believing that we’re going to automate 90% of jobs and cure all diseases by the next Presidential election.”

## What AGI Would Still Need That Does Not Exist

For all the progress in AI over the past three years, the technical gaps between current systems and AGI remain significant.

Today’s AI cannot engage in continual learning — updating itself from new data without forgetting what it already knows. It requires enormous datasets to learn tasks that a human child masters from a handful of examples. Its reasoning relies more on pattern matching than flexible thinking. It cannot maintain long-term coherence across extended tasks or navigate the physical world.

The International AI Safety Report describes current AI as having a “jagged” cognitive profile: excellent at math and information recall, poor at learning from experience and social understanding. That jaggedness separates today’s tools from anything resembling general intelligence. Smoothing it out may require fundamental breakthroughs no one has yet achieved.

These are not minor gaps. Until they are solved, AGI remains a projection, not a product.

## What This Means for Jobs in Horry County

Whether AGI arrives in 2027 or 2037, the economic disruption from current AI is already underway — and the effects are not hypothetical on the Grand Strand.

Tristan Harris, the former Google ethicist, warns of a “global jobs market collapse” by 2027. He describes AI systems as “millions of new digital immigrants that are Nobel Prize-level capability, work at superhuman speed, and will work for less than minimum wage.” He calls it “NAFTA 2.0.” Stanford research shows a 13 percent decline in job postings for early-career workers already. In 2025 alone, 55,000 AI-related layoffs were tracked by Challenger, Gray and Christmas. Microsoft cut 9,000 jobs. Salesforce eliminated 4,000 customer service roles.

**For Horry County, the picture is more complicated than a simple headline about robots taking jobs.** Pascual Restrepo, a Yale economist, argues that most work “simply isn’t important enough to bother replacing.” His research suggests AGI does not make human skills obsolete — it revalues them. Hospitality, arts, customer support, and design will likely remain human because the computing resources required to replace them would not justify the expense. In a county where tourism, restaurants, and service industries employ tens of thousands of people, that distinction matters.

The International AI Safety Report found early evidence of reduced demand for writing and translation jobs, alongside increased demand for machine learning programming and chatbot development. Junior workers in software engineering and customer service face the most immediate potential disruption. No significant overall employment effects have been documented yet.

There is an upside for some trades. Data center construction — the physical infrastructure behind all this AI — pays workers an average of $81,800 per year, 32 percent above comparable non-data-center construction work. Some electricians are earning $260,000 annually on data center projects. As the Stargate project and other infrastructure buildouts move forward, skilled tradespeople may find themselves in higher demand, not less.

## The Safety Questions Nobody Wants to Answer

The race toward AGI is raising safety concerns that extend well beyond job displacement.

The 2026 International AI Safety Report, led by Turing Award winner Yoshua Bengio and more than 100 AI experts nominated by over 30 countries, documented a range of risks already materializing. AI-generated deepfake pornography disproportionately targets women and girls. Criminal groups are using AI for cyberattacks. Current systems can assist in biological and chemical weapon development. In one striking finding, clinicians’ tumor detection rates dropped 6 percent after months of using AI assistance during colonoscopies — suggesting overreliance on AI tools can erode human expertise rather than enhance it.

AI companion apps have reached tens of millions of users, with evidence of psychological dependence. In 2023, an open letter signed by more than 30,000 people — including Bengio, Musk, and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak — called for pausing advanced AI training. Geoffrey Hinton, another Turing Award winner, left Google in 2023 to warn publicly about losing control of AI systems.

Even the people building this technology acknowledge the stakes. Amodei, who runs one of the leading AGI-focused companies, said: “Humanity is about to be handed almost unimaginable power, and it is deeply unclear whether our social, political and technological systems possess the maturity to wield it.”

For a county already grappling with growth pressures, housing costs, and infrastructure strain, the question is not abstract. If AGI-level systems arrive — whether in 2027 or 2035 — the communities that understood the risks early will be better positioned than the ones that got caught reading press releases. The hype cycle will keep spinning. The smartest thing Horry County residents can do is watch what these companies build, not what they promise.
