If you happen to live in an area where flooding is a common occurrence and the chances are you’re very keen to make sure you have a flood proof property.

Something that’s worth keeping in mind is it’s actually impossible to completely flood proof a property, but there is a lot you can do to reduce the damage that a flood has.

In the last few years, there has been a quick rise in the number of flash floods and the amount of flooding that happened during those flash floods. So if you’re ready to do a little bit of flood proofing or damage reduction, here are some tips for you.

How likely is it that your house is going to flood?

Stormy weather in some places isn’t unusual. However, flash flooding events are becoming more typical in many places.

With each year getting a wet out with higher occurrences of a lot of rain, it is always worth assessing your home’s likelihood of being in an area that’s going to flood.

You can often find this information for your local area, or if you’re new to the area, you can ask a few of your neighbors.

Even if your home isn’t located in an area that is known for flooding, it is a good idea to have some level of flood damage protection.

What can I do in the face of a flash flood?

Even if you live in an area that is not likely to get flooded from time to time, you might be in a situation where there is going to be a flash flood.

There are several steps that you can take to limit the damage that your property and belongings take.

The first thing you can do is move all of your important documents and valuables upstairs in the home or to the highest floor possible. You can then switch off your gas, electricity, and water supplies.

It is very important that you keep in mind things like your washing machine and dishwasher. You’re not going to be able to move these, and they likely will be damaged; however, it is a good idea to turn them off anyway.

You should also be prepared to evacuate immediately when you are asked to, and this includes your pets. The moment that you do get a flash flood warning, this is the time to take action and to move everything you can while giving yourself time to leave.

Are there budget ways for flood prevention?

One of the first things you can do is make sure that you have some sandbags available. Stock up on sandbags in advance as they have many uses during a flooding event.

You can ensure that you have varnished the wood within the home. While varnish won’t completely stop any damage, it will make it more resistant to dirty water. And it will be easier to clean when the flood is over.

It is always a good idea to have the number of a flood damage restoration company so that you can get your house ship-shape as fast as possible.

If you do happen to have shells around your home with things on at the higher up, these are the better. If you don’t have the ability to move your valuables to a higher floor before you need to evacuate the property, high shelves are often a great solution. They are also very cheap to install.

If you do live in an area where you often have flash floods, and this is known to you, one of the key things you can do is have electrical sockets moved higher up on the wall. This will mean they’re less likely to have any damage from a low-level flood.

Any units that you have that MDF or chipboard can be replaced with solid wood and metal or plastics. This will stop any water from being absorbed, and it is highly likely you can continue to use any of these surfaces or cupboards after any flood.

Plastic barriers around the home can be expensive, but they can also dramatically slow the flow of the water as it comes towards your property. You and your neighbors might be able to pull resources together and create barriers around your properties as these are beneficial to everybody.

A key defense against flooding has flood proof doors and windows. Although a flood board can be cost-effective, it is better to have a permanent fixture that can be used quickly.
