The Myrtle Beach City Council approved a mid-year salary adjustment Tuesday, December 12th.

In a review of comparable cities and counties, the city determined Myrtle Beach’s compensation was at or below market rates.

In January the salary adjustment for each employee will take effect. Certified police officers will receive an increase of $7,500; paramedics will receive an increase of $7,000; and all other city employees will receive an increase of $5,000.

The city’s lowest full-time salary will be $18 an hour, or $37,440 for a solid waste worker. That’s an 8.8% increase from the previous salary.

As well as reflecting the staff’s workload, the city believes the raises will also help recruit and retain employees.

Below are the new minimum starting salaries for a few positions:

The salary of a certified police officer is $60,174

$57,657 for an uncertified police officer

$50,835 for a detention officer

Officer of Communications: $50,835

Paramedic Firefighter: $60,632

$50,434 for a firefighter

Mechanic for heavy equipment: $51,438

CDL for Heavy Equipment Operator: $46,924

Worker in Solid Waste: $37,440
