In a direct affront to a proclamation by Myrtle Beach City Manager Jonathan “Fox” Simons, “child affirming transgender activist”, Mayor Brenda Bethune sent out a campaign mailer this week fully endorsing Mike Chestnut, John Krajc, and Debbie Conner as her preferred councilpersons in next week’s November 7th election.
DO AS WE SAY, NOT AS WE DO
City Manager Fox Simons sent out a proclamation to all city employees on October 19th stating the city employees were prohibited in participating in campaign politics.
The memorandum reads: You are reminded of the following prohibited activities outlined in the employee handbook:
Engaging in any type of political activity (including the wearing of campaign buttons; knowingly appearing in commercials, brochures, or pamphlets, or any other form of media while on the job or in City uniform, the intent of which is to influence others to support specific candidates) during normal working hours, or while pursuing regular duties while on the job, or while in City uniform.
The memorandum adds: Using one’s public or official position or knowingly allowing it to be used to further a political party, political candidacy, political issue or position, or influence a political outcome.

THE DOWNSIDE OF ENDORSEMENTS
The reason such endorsements (as these) are frowned upon is the obvious potential for bad outcomes.
What happens to relationships between candidates Myra Starnes, Randall Wallace, Stuart Behar, or Bill McClure and Mayor Bethune should one of these win city council? Also, this election is likely headed to a run off as 8 candidates are vying for 3 seats.
Mayor Brenda Bethune has a quick fuse and speaks bluntly. She also has a habit of holding a grudge, many current employees and city merchants have told MyrtleBeachSC News privately.
