The City of Myrtle Beach made international news today, as the United Kingdom’s Daily Mail’s headline reads: Booking a vacation? Stay away from Myrtle Beach! Analysis of TripAdvisor reviews reveals US cities with the worst hotel reviews.

The article was written by Journalist TILLY ARMSTRONG CONSUMER REPORTER FOR DAILYMAIL.COM. The Daily Mail has over 1.3 million circulation. The readership is 55% female.

The article states Myrtle Beach has been ranked as the city with the worst hotel reviews in the country. 

The article continue to state that the most common gripe was the smell of smoke in rooms, while a lack of toilet paper, bed bugs and thin walls were also frequent complaints waged against hotels across the country.  

Myrtle Beach Dirtiest Rooms

There were 130,000 mentions of bed bugs in hotel reviews in Myrtle Beach alone, according to the research, while there were 168,000 mentions for Atlantic City establishments.

According to the article an analysis of TripAdvisor by travel guide company PlanetWare, one in five people who visited the South Carolina beach-side city left a one or two-star review. 

This was also confirmed to MyrtleBeachSC News by 360 individual condo owners who complained to us after Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce C.E.O. Karen Riordan put out a public statement combatting those claims.

Over 17,600 condos in Myrtle Beach are individually owned and managed by property managers. 360 of these individual condo owners tell MyrtleBeachSC News that the data is accurate. They state their rooms are not being well cleaned nor well maintained by Myrtle Beach rental companies.
