January marks the beginning of a new legislative session.

Small businesses across South Carolina are meeting at the S.C. State House to rally against a bill sponsored by Horry County S.C. Senator Luke Rankin.

Senator Rankin

The bill allows for multiple businesses selling alcohol to be sued multiple times when a patron drinks in their different establishments.

EXAMPLE: A person visits a restaurant for lunch and has a glass of wine with his meal. Later that same day, he visits a sports bar and has a few drinks with his friends watching a football game. Then even later he has dinner, and has one beer. At the end of the day, he visits the House of Blues to see a live concert where he has another beer.

Under Rankin’s pro S.C. Trial Lawyer’s legislation, should this patron get into a wreck after leaving the house of blues, the other vehicle involved in the accident has rights to sue all the establishments above.

WHAT THE LAW HAS CREATED FOR SMALL BUSINESSES

Because of the unlimited liabilities caused by Rankin’s law, insurance rates have gone us as much as 20 times their previous rates. Even worse, insurance carriers are leaving the state of S.C. because of these risks. The only winners are Rankin’s Trial Lawyer associates.

The S.C. Venue Crisis is working to help small businesses and have Rankin’s law changed.
