Pests can be a nuisance and when they end up getting onto the property, or worse in it, then it can cause a whole host of problems.

Any household would ideally like to prevent pests from getting onto the property in the first place. With that in mind, there are certainly some preventative measures that can be taken to help reduce and prevent pests from coming onto the property. Here are six tips to help prevent pests from rearing their ugly heads!

Keep the kitchen clean

First and foremost, cleanliness is key. It’s important that a kitchen is a place that’s kept tidy. It’s very easy to leave it in a mess and that results in pests making their way into the home.

Leaving out dirty plates and anything that’s not sealed in an air-tight container or cupboard is likely to be a magnet for pests of all shapes and sizes.

Try to keep the kitchen clean with regular wipe-downs of surfaces and make sure everything is stored away after finishing up in the space.

Avoid any debris surrounding the home

Debris is likely to build up around the home. This is caused by harsh weather conditions that can end up blowing all manner of debris into the backyard. From leaves to more bulky materials, it’s important to keep the exterior space as clean as possible.

If there are any areas where the debris is starting to build up and collect, it can become a warm hub for pests to nest in and that will only attract more pests as a result.

Be sure to clear the exterior of debris on a regular basis, especially during the colder months of the year when pests will likely look towards the home for warmth. If it’s something that the household can’t do themselves, then there are plenty of services out there.

Gardening services and those that help remove debris in the garden, are going to help greatly with keeping pests at bay.

Fill in all the gaps and holes leading into the property

It’s important to try and stay on top of the home’s exterior vulnerabilities. For example, there can often be a lot of gaps and holes that are left to expose the interior home for anything and anyone to get into – providing they fit through it of course.

Filling in gaps is easy enough when it comes to those that don’t need an expert to do the job properly. However, there are certain materials that may be worthwhile looking at when it comes to improving durability.

For example, some rodents can chomp through just about anything, so it may be worth getting something like steel wool and caulk. Both are effective in helping keep them away.

Seal all possible food containers

With food containers, make sure that all of them are sealed up and shut away. Whether that’s putting them in the fridge or placing them in a cupboard that isn’t exposed to the elements. This is going to help greatly in making sure that anything and everything food-related, is kept away from these pests if they do get in.

Once a pest has found food, they’ll often take it back to their nests and bring back the whole cavalry!

Set traps or lay preventative chemicals

In order to help avoid any problems with pests in the first place, it may be worthwhile investing in some traps. Laying these preventative measures whether that’s traps to harsh chemicals, there are plenty of options available. All of these can be placed in areas where it’s common to find pests lurking.

There are some traps that are more humane and not so violent in their capturing of pests. This may be considered if the household is willing to deal with the pests once they’ve been caught. However, when releasing them it’s best to do so far away from the home, otherwise, they have a habit of finding their way back easily.

Call the experts

In cases where the home has become overrun with pests, it’s time to call in the experts. Professionals like SWAT Wildlife, are one of many that can be helpful in removing rodents and unwanted guests from in and around the home.

This is required in cases where there may be one or two pests to an infestation. The sooner that it can be dealt with, the better!
