Jeff Duncan bows out for re-election

The seat has been held since 2001 by local businessman Jeff Duncan.

U.S. Rep. Jeff Duncan announced Wednesday, January 17th, that he will not seek reelection in this solidly Republican district in South Carolina.

Businessman Duncan said he ran for office after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks because he wanted to serve his country.

As a career progresses, one must step aside and allow others to bring fresh ideas and abilities to the fight for liberty, Duncan said.

He focuses on energy policy, pushing for more nuclear power. He believes small-scale nuclear reactors need a boost in research to provide more power.

He also organized his Faith and Freedom BBQ, where thousands of conservatives gathered in Anderson to hear from key Republicans.

Last year, Duncan’s wife filed for divorce, claiming the congressman left her and was having a sexual relationship with a lobbyist. She said he had been unfaithful before.

Duncan calls the breakup of his marriage a “difficult and private moment.”

More than a dozen House Republicans are retiring or seeking another office next year.

It begins in March that candidates can file for November’s election, and the primaries start in June. When the seat was available in 2010, several candidates remained in the Statehouse — Senators Rex Rice, Richard Cash, and Neal Collins. The majority leader of the state Senate announced he would run, but pulled out before filing.
