There won’t be a soft opening of the Surfside Beach pier on Oct. 12 as stated on the town council’s agenda tonight.

Listed under the communications coordinator section of tonight’s agenda is a description of a soft opening celebration on Oct. 12 from 4-6 p.m. with a live band, swag bags, and a trolley.

Town officials said apparently there was a misunderstanding about the pier’s completion somewhere along the line. For safety reasons, the public will not be allowed on the pier until the town gets a certificate of occupancy. John Adair is the town’s public works director.

Following a series of inspections by the fire marshal, building inspector, architect and contractor, there is a long list of items that need to be addressed.

A pier dedication service will take place on Sept. 21 on the ground near the pier, but the public will not be allowed on the pier itself.

A series of delays have continually pushed back the opening date.

The pier parking lot is almost finished, and the town’s contractor and employees are working to get the pier ready so that visitors can walk out on it. The town said earlier this summer that an official opening would probably take place in spring. The opening was then moved to October 12th.

At this time no date certain has been provided for when the Surfside Beach pier will open.
