The Horry County Police Department is investigating after a deceased person was found in the ocean near the Springmaid Pier on Nash Street beach access in unincorporated Horry County.

The Horry County Coroner’s Office has disclosed the name of a man whose body was discovered floating in the ocean on Tuesday, close to the Springmaid Pier.

The man who was identified as Jon Wright, a 36-year-old from Columbia, was known to frequent the area, according to the coroner’s office.

A postmortem examination will be scheduled later this week to establish what caused Wright’s death.

A woman discovered the body and began to shout in alarm. The body was floating facedown in the water close to the pier. Police reached the location around 3 p.m.

One more witness, who did not want to appear on camera, stated that he was one of the first individuals present when the body was found on the shore. He described the body as looking like a woman wearing swimming attire.

The Horry County Police Department is currently conducting a thorough investigation into this case.
