Press Release

[Murrells Inlet, SC January 26, 2022]

Brian Sweeney, a 16-year resident of Murrells Inlet, announced recently that he is throwing his hat in the ring for the Republican nomination to fill the SC House seat being vacated by Russell Fry in District 106

Sweeney was born on Long Island, New York as the second of eight siblings.  He is still very close with all of them as well as nieces, nephews, cousins, etc.

After graduating from State University of New York at Stony Brook with a dual BS/BA in Biology/Psychology, he started in the insurance business in Manhattan and moved to Manhattan shortly thereafter.  His insurance career is ongoing even after 40+ years in the business in various locations including Manhattan, Los Angeles (twice), Nashville (where he met Marilyn, the love of his life), Scottsdale, AZ (where their son was born), Manhattan again and now Surfside Beach where his insurance agency has its office.  Much of his insurance career was with American companies but he also was fortunate enough to work for a Japan based insurance agency for 21 years before retiring from there to start his agency in SC.

“My wife, who is a true Virginia Southerner, and I moved from New York with our son and two dogs to Murrells Inlet 16 years ago and have never looked back.”

Sweeney is a member of the SC Republican Party, Horry County GOP, Grand Strand Patriots, The Greater Burgess Community Association and is President of HCGOP Burgess 2 Precinct.  He has been following local politics and issues for a number of years.

He and his wife and are active members of Palmetto Performers, which is an organization that performs music and dance shows for assisted living centers along the Grand Strand. They are also members of USA Dance, The Ball Room Dance Preservation Society and various line dancing groups.

“Having spent nearly all of my adult life in the private sector, I have been blessed and I am now in a position to give back as best I can by representing my friends and neighbors in District 106.”

“I am very concerned with the intrusion  of the Federal government into nearly every aspect of our lives, the very noticeable increase in the crime rate, the transformation of our schools from places of learning into promoters of various social agendas and the seemingly exponential property development in our communities without concern for the infrastructure and planning needed to accommodate progress while maintaining the quality of life and low property taxes that many of us moved here to obtain.”

“If elected, I will do everything I can to minimize government oversight and restore common sense to the legislative process.”
