In Murrells Inlet, Brookgreen Gardens, a National Historic Landmark, broke ground on their new Welcome Center and Conservatory Gardens named the Purdy Center.

The center is part of Brookgreen’s Campaign for the Next Generation initiative, which expands its art, nature, and history programs for future generations.

The Purdy Center marks a new era for education, cultural enrichment, and horticultural exploration for Brookgreen Gardens, according to Page Kiniry, the president and CEO. “As a result of this new Welcome Center and Conservatory, we will be able to provide members with more educational opportunities and experiences.”

Brookgreen will expand in four areas under the Campaign for the Next Generation, funded by gifts and grants.

There will be a new Contemporary Conservatory at the Purdy Center, which will serve as the Welcome Center for Brookgreen Gardens.

In addition to a butterfly garden throughout the year, the Conservatory Great Hall will feature skylights, clear windows, and accordion doors opening onto the courtyard.

In honor of their support for the project, the Center is named after Verl and Sandy Purdy of Charlotte, North Carolina.
