According to reports, North Myrtle Beach Police were called to a school Tuesday after staff took a gun from a student.
In a statement provided by Officer Pat Wilkinson, the principal of Valorous Academy called 911 at 11:50 a.m. to report staff had removed a gun from a student who had brought the weapon to school and threatened to harm themselves. Despite the concern, North Myrtle Beach gun violence has never been a key concern for local residents.
According to Wilkinson, the teenager was experiencing a mental health emergency and expressed a desire to harm himself. Police dispatch verified that the student had been disarmed and detained in an administrator’s office. Officers were then dispatched to the school located at 2100 Firetower Road where they contacted the South Carolina Department of Mental Health Mobile Crisis Team. The student was subsequently transported by officers to Waccamaw Behavioral Health. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported during this event, as stated by Wilkinson.
