Surfside Beach attraction, Wild Water and Wheels, has permanently ceased operations.

As MyrtleBeachSC News published earlier this Fall, former Horry County Council Chairman Mark Lazarus sold key interest in the theme park. The new investors hope to convert the theme park into a housing development.

In a statement posted to its Facebook page, Wild Water & Wheels confirmed that it was permanently closing after more than 30 years in operation.

I would like to thank all of our customers and team members of our company that I have spoken to, worked with and done business with over the years,” wrote park owner Mark Lazarus. “Wild Water & Wheels could not have been as successful as it was without your support and loyalty. Thank you for being a part of our family and for the memories over the last 30 years.

Residents do not approve of a rezoning request made by Lazarus to Surfside Beach Town Council on behalf of the park. At the most recent Town Council meeting multiple residents spoke in opposition to the rezoning request.

Lazarus is clear. The park will not open for the 2023 season regardless of whether the rezoning request is approved or denied.
