After beating Texas State, Coastal Carolina enters the final stretch of the season at 7 -3 with only two losses in the Sun Belt Conference. They play Army this Saturday, followed up by James Madison who is both undefeated in the conference and an overall perfect 10 – 0.
James Madison, however, is transitioning from the FCS to the FBS which makes the Virginia based school unable to win a conference championship.
James Madison should, but can’t rule the Sun Belt Conference this year per NCAA rules. But not being king, doesn’t mean James Madison can’t be the king maker.
Appalachian State lost to Coastal Carolina University in a thrilling nationally televised October 10th night game. App State currently stands at 6 -4 overall, but has only two losses in the Sun Belt.
Georgia Southern has a flickering chance to win the conference, but must play App State at home on November 25th. App State is highly favored to win this last home game of 2023.
Meanwhile, James Madison plays a home game against App State this Saturday. At home and unbeaten, James Madison is favored. However, App State will come to play. Tarnishing James Madison’s perfect season would be a marquee win for Appalachian State. It would also give App State an inside run for winning the Sun Belt East Conference.
Coastal Carolina University plays James Madison in Conway at Brooks Stadium on November 25th. Should Coastal Carolina beat James Madison, they win the Sun Belt Eastern Conference outright.
Should they lose, and App State beat both Georgia Southern and James Madison, the mountaineers will win the conference.
Regardless of which team wins the east, they are likely to play 8 -2 Troy in the Sun Belt Championship Game.
