On Monday, Conway city leaders in Conway S.C. approved an $85 million spending plan that would raise property taxes by 16% next year.
Local residents were highly upset about the tax increase, however Conway has legitimate reasons why the increase is necessary. Meanwhile, the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce has a $54 million annual tax budget, yet few locals ever raise a whimper. The City of Conway is accountable to FOIA laws. The Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce is not.
MBACC sells the $54 million tax to local businesses. The funds then become private dollars that MBACC can do with as it pleases.

Conway can justify a tax hike
Conway City Councilman William Goldfinch said the hike is necessary to keep up with city employees’ cost of living.
Inquiring why Goldfinch is raising my taxes, he said, has been a common question from people. It is the reality of the city of Conway that it has no other option but to increase taxes to pay its employees as costs rise, groceries rise, and everything else rises.
“Our police officers and all of our employees deserve a living wage, and the only way to do this is to increase our millage, especially in a reassessment year,” Goldfinch said.
