The Dillon City Council voted on Monday night, October 11, 2021 to not support the current plans of completing I-73, which would connect Highway 501 near Marion to I-95.
The city council voted unanimously in favor of supporting a resolution that opposes the South Carolina Department of Transportation’s preferred route of I-73 through Dillon County.
Instead, the Dillon County GOP chairman said he would rather see state Highway 9 widened from Dillon to Green Sea.
HORRY COUNTY RESIDENTS SAY NO
Sixty two percent of Horry County residents said they did not want Hospitality tax dollars allocated to I-73.
THE MBACC SPIN
The Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce spin includes a “supposed poll” taken stating state residents want I-73.
The spin also includes a statement that tourists pay for the bulk of the Hospitality fees collected in Horry County.
THE TRUTH
Residents clearly do not want to pay for I-73.
Few tourists frequent restaurants and bars in Carolina Forest or Longs. It is the 350,000 year round locals, who pay the bulk of the fees collected in the unincorporated county.
WHO WANTS THIS ROAD?
It should be clear to everyone now that it is the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce and the Coastal Carolina Association of Realtors who want this road built.
HOW DO A FEW “SLICK” HORRY COUNTY COUNCILMEN PULL THIS OFF?
The trick is to get Horry County committed to the funding before the S.C. General Assembly can vote on the issue next February to March.
In the documents below, Horry County Councilman Dennis DiSibato states that Horry County’s $4.2 million annual pledge to fund the Interstate is based on the state providing adequate funding.
DiSibato, however, does not define what adequate funding means. It is intentionally ambiguous.
