The honeymoon was on full display Tuesday night for Surfside Beach Mayor Bob Hellyer. Residents loudly applauded his call to re-instate Surfside Beach town council meetings to two each month.

Last Fall, the previous town council voted to allow only one meeting monthly.

We ran our campaigns on transparency,” said Hellyer.

Councilwoman Scoles objected to the measure. Her objection was met with boos from those in attendance. The room was filled to capacity. Mayor Hellyer then called for a point of order to silence the room.

Mayor Hellyer asked for a vote by hand. The measure passed 5 for with 2 against. Mrs. Scoles and Mr. Dietrich voted against the measure.

Once again, the audience broke out in loud applause. Mr. Hellyer called a point of order bringing the room to silence once again.

As the meeting closed, Councilman Dietrich stated, “It has been a rough four years, … but we are finally getting there.”
