SC Freedom Caucus gets solid House wins over Whetsell

The SC Freedom Caucus, once again enjoyed two large wins over powerful SC Political Consultant Walter Whetsell.

In a fight for S.C. Liberty, Chris Huff won District 28 handily.

The South Carolina House of Representatives District 28 was held by Freedom Caucus member Ashley Trantham (R). Trantham chose not to run for re-election.

Freedom Caucus winner, Chris Huff is a retired pastor who lives in Pelzer. Huff had a substantial win against Kerri Smith.

Smith is the South Carolina regional president for Self-Help Credit Union and lives in Simpsonville.

With 100% of precincts reporting, unofficial results show Chris Huff’s win with 1,771 votes, followed by Kerri Smith’s 894 votes.

Huff will face Democrat J Fritz Wiebel, who was unopposed in the primary, in the November general election.

The state House District 28 race was thought to be among the most highly contested races statewide, yet Huff won in a landslide.

SC Freedom Caucus wins District 34

Roger Nutt held the District 34 seat until he decided to run for the S.C. Senate, leaving the seat vacant.

In unofficial results, Freedom Caucus Member Sarita Edgerton received 1,713 votes, while JoAnne LaBounty received 1,035 votes.

In a tight race for S.C. House District 9, with 100% of precincts reporting, Blake Sanders overtook Freedom Caucus Candidate James Galyean’s early lead with 1,970 votes. Galyean had 1,674 votes.

S.C. Political Consultant Walter Whetsell spent millions of dollars in the upstate attempting to unseat conservatives.

Whetsell’s Palmetto Truth Project can only be viewed as failing in these upstate races.

The Freedom Caucus won two of the three races competing in last night’s Republican Primary Runoffs.

Anti Pro Life S.C. Senator Katrina Shealy loses to Kennedy

South Carolina’s longest-serving female senator, Katrina Shealy, lost Tuesday’s Republican primary runoff to attorney Carlisle Kennedy.

A little after 8 p.m., Shealy called Kennedy to concede.

At 11 p.m., Kennedy had nearly 62.5% of the vote to Shealy’s 37.5%.

Reporters were told Kennedy did not answer, so she left a voicemail congratulating him.

Shealy told reporters, “There is no path to victory.”.

In a Facebook post, Kennedy said, in part, “I am deeply honored and grateful for the trust you have placed in me by electing me as your next State Senator. I would not have been able to achieve this victory without your unwavering support. I also wish to thank Senator Shealy for her many years of service.”

In November, Kennedy will not be challenged.

Katrina Shealy, the Lexington County senator is the third Republican female incumbent to lose her primary in a chamber with few women – six in total, three Republicans, two Democrats and one Independent.

Penry Gustafson, of Kershaw, and Sandy Senn, of Charleston, both lost their June 11 primaries.

Independent Sen. Mia McLeod of Richland County did not seek reelection. In 2025, a man will represent her Democratic-leaning district. State Sen. Margie Bright Matthews, D-Colleton, is unopposed. Tameika Isaac Devine, D-Richland, faces a third-party challenger in November, and she is the newest female senator.

Katrina Shealy was campaigned for by Gustafson and Senn on Tuesday.

According to Kennedy’s campaign website, he is running to “safeguard the freedoms and rights we cherish today for the sake of our unborn child.”

Shealy told reporters she had no regrets about her vote.

Top Tips for New Social Casino Players: Getting Started the Right Way

If you’ve never played at a social casino before, you should know that the experience is quite exciting. From entertaining games to generous bonuses, the best sites have enough offerings to impress new players. You can make the most of your gaming sessions at social casinos and improve your winning chances by following these tips:

Learn How Social and Sweepstakes Casinos Work

One of the most important things to do before playing at social and sweepstakes casinos is to learn how they work. Sweepstakes casinos are not your regular gaming sites. These platforms operate on a free-to-play model, allowing you to play casino-style games without worrying about losses. They use a dual-currency system, providing you with free coins for gaming sessions.

Practice With Gold Coins

Gold coins are part of the dual currency system we mentioned in the previous section. These coins are only for gameplay; they don’t have monetary value. This is unlike sweeps coins that you can exchange for rewards. Since sweeps coins are redeemable, practicing games with gold coins is best. Once you understand the basics, you switch to sweeps slots and earn more sweeps coins.

Take Advantage of Bonuses

The best way to get free coins at a sweepstakes casino is to claim bonuses. You’ll find different offers, ranging from welcome bonuses to daily login promotions and referral packages. These offers are usually credited to your account without requiring deposits. The extra coins extend your gaming time as you have more coins to play with.

Set Spending Budgets

You don’t have to purchase anything to play at sweepstakes casinos. However, if you want to buy coins, make sure to limit how much you spend. Only purchase amounts you can afford to spare for such gaming activities. Some casinos also have restriction tools that you can use to limit your purchases for a specific time frame.

Understand the Terms for Coin Redemption

Sweepstakes casinos allow you to redeem sweeps coins for rewards, but you must keep some terms in mind. One of these is the minimum redemption amount. This means having up to a certain number of sweeps coins before you can exchange them. Some sites also request that you play through your sweeps coins a few times before redemption.

Finally

The tips we provided make it easier to get started at sweepstakes casinos. Once you know how these platforms work, you can make the most of your gaming sessions. Just note that sweepstakes games are still games of chance, so luck largely determines how many coins you win.

Ideas for Decorating Your Living Room: A Guide to Stylish Interiors

Decorating a living room is an exciting challenge that allows you to express your personality and style. The living room is the heart of the home, a place where we spend time with family and friends, relax after a long day, and enjoy daily life. Here are some ideas to help create a cozy and stylish living room.

1. Choosing colors

Neutral colors: Using neutral colors like white, gray, or beige creates a calm and harmonious space. Accents in more vibrant colors can add character and enliven the interior.

Earth tones: Colors inspired by nature, such as olive green, browns, and warm terracotta shades, give the interior a cozy and organic look.

Contrasts: For the more daring, combining contrasting colors can create a dynamic and modern look. An example would be pairing dark walls with light furniture.

2. Furniture

Functionality: Choose furniture that is both stylish and functional. The sofa should be comfortable yet aesthetically pleasing. Investing in high-quality furniture that will last for years is worthwhile.

Style: Match the style of the furniture to the overall character of the interior. Simple, minimalist forms are suitable for modern living rooms, while elegant and richly decorated furniture fits well in classic interiors.

Multifunctionality: Consider multifunctional furniture such as coffee tables with storage space, sofa beds, or ottomans with hidden compartments.

3. Lighting

Layers of light: Create various light sources to adapt the atmosphere to different situations. Ceiling lights, wall sconces, floor lamps, and table lamps can work together to create cozy and functional lighting.

Natural light: Maximize the amount of natural light entering the living room. Use light curtains or blinds that can be easily opened during the day.

Accent lighting: Use accent lighting to highlight particular decorative elements such as paintings, bookshelves, or plants.

4. Accessories and decorations

Textiles: Introduce a variety of textiles such as pillows, throws, rugs, and curtains to add coziness and color to the interior. Mix different textures and patterns to create an interesting visual effect.

Art: Paintings, photographs, wall art prints or sculptures can become the focal point of the living room. Choose pieces that reflect your interests and style.

Plants: Green potted plants add freshness and life to any interior. They are also a great way to improve air quality.

Personal touches: Incorporate elements that have personal significance to you, such as family photos, travel souvenirs, or handmade decorations.

5. Space organization

Functional zones: Divide the living room into functional zones such as a relaxation area, reading nook, or workspace. This will help organize the space and make it more functional.

Storage: Ensure adequate storage space. Cabinets, shelves, and trunks help keep things organized and make the living room look neat.

Minimalism: Try to avoid cluttering the space with too many decorations or furniture. Sometimes less is more – a minimalist approach can give the interior elegance and tranquility.

Decorating the living room is a process that requires thought and planning but is incredibly rewarding. The key is for the space to be not only beautiful but also functional and comfortable. Use the above ideas as inspiration and create a living room that reflects your personality and meets all your needs.

Kissing incident leads to man’s nose sliced by sword

0

According to Horry County police records, a 36-year-old man faces charges after allegedly slicing off part of a man’s nose with a sword.

Peter Tighe, of Myrtle Beach, was charged with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature. He remains in the J. Reuben Long Detention Center on a $15,000 bond.

The police responded to the area of Highway 707 and Bay Road on Saturday about 12:05 a.m. for a man with a large laceration. At a Circle K on Holmestown Road in the Myrtle Beach area, the responding officer spoke to the man who told him that he had been cut by a katana sword.

According to the report, the man said Tighe was angry with him because he kissed Tighe’s family member in the parking lot. He says Tighe started swinging the sword at him, cutting his nose in the process.

According to the report, the responding officer showed the victim a photo of a person known to Horry County police who lived near the Circle K and carried “unique knives and weapons.” The victim told the officer the person in the photo was Tighe, the report said.

The victim, who had a flap of skin hanging off his nose and a cut under his eye, was taken to a hospital with his injuries.

Understanding the History of Katana Swords

The katana, a symbol of the samurai’s honor and a testament to Japanese craftsmanship, holds a rich history. Its distinctive curved blade and long grip have made it an iconic representation of Japanese culture.

Born in the Kamakura Period, the katana was more than a weapon. It was a status symbol, a work of art, and a part of the samurai’s soul. Its evolution over centuries reflects the changing times and needs of the warriors who wielded it.

In this article, we delve into the history of katana swords, exploring their origins, significance, and enduring legacy. Join us as we journey through time, tracing the path of these remarkable swords from the battlefields of feudal Japan to their place in modern culture.

What is a Katana Sword?

A katana is a traditional Japanese sword known for its unique design. It features a curved, slender, single-edged blade, a circular or squared guard, and a long grip that can accommodate two hands.

A detailed view of a katana swordby Lukasz Szmigiel (https://unsplash.com/@szmigieldesign)

The term “katana” translates to “sword” in Japanese. However, it specifically refers to the type of sword used by samurai warriors. The katana’s design allows it to be worn with the blade facing upward, enabling swift and efficient unsheathing for combat.

In essence, the katana is a symbol of the samurai’s strength, skill, and spirit.

The Birth of the Katana: Kamakura Period

The katana originated in the Kamakura Period (1185–1333). This era marked a significant shift in Japanese warfare and society.

The katana was developed as a response to the need for more effective weaponry. Its design evolved from earlier swords like the tachi.

The katana quickly became a preferred weapon among samurai warriors. Its sharpness and cutting ability were unmatched, making it a formidable tool in battle.

The Katana and the Samurai: A Symbol of Status

The katana was more than just a weapon. It was a symbol of the samurai’s status and soul.

Worn with the blade facing upward, it allowed for swift unsheathing in combat. This unique feature distinguished the katana from other swords.

During the Edo period (1603–1868), the katana was part of the daisho. This pair of long and short swords was a mark of the samurai’s authority.

The katana’s significance extended beyond the battlefield. It was deeply intertwined with the samurai’s code of honor and discipline, known as “Bushido”.

The Art of Crafting a Katana

Creating a katana is a meticulous process. It involves folding and forging steel to strike a balance between sharpness and durability.

The aesthetic qualities of the katana, such as the hamon (temper line) and the tsuba (hand guard), are highly valued. They contribute to the sword’s beauty and uniqueness.

The process can take several months to complete. Each step is carried out with precision and care, reflecting the pinnacle of traditional Japanese craftsmanship.

The Evolution of the Katana: From Combat to Culture

The katana’s design evolved from earlier swords like the tachi. This was a response to the need for more effective weaponry during the Mongol invasions of Japan in the 13th century.

During the Edo period (1603–1868), the katana also served as a symbol of the samurai’s authority. It was part of the daisho, the paired long and short swords worn by samurai.

The Meiji Restoration in 1868 led to the decline of the samurai class. The wearing of swords in public was eventually outlawed, marking a shift in the katana’s role in Japanese society.

The Katana in Modern Times

Modern katanas are still made today by skilled artisans using traditional techniques. They are prized by collectors and martial arts practitioners.

The katana has influenced various martial arts, including Kenjutsu, Iaido, and Kendo. These focus on swordsmanship and technique.

The katana has also become an iconic element in popular culture. It is featured in movies, anime, and video games, often representing the ideals of the samurai.

Preserving the Legacy: Katana Swords Today

The preservation of katana swords is considered an important aspect of cultural heritage. Some swords are even designated as national treasures in Japan.

Collecting and maintaining katanas is a specialized hobby. Enthusiasts seek to preserve the craftsmanship and history of these swords.

The katana’s influence extends beyond Japan. It has a global community of enthusiasts and practitioners who appreciate its history and artistry.

The sword’s historical significance is also recognized in museums and exhibitions around the world. Katanas are displayed as important artifacts.

AAA: 70.9 Million US Travelers will Travel Independence Day week, July 4th

CHARLOTTE, NC., (June 25, 2024) – AAA projects Independence Day travelers will set new records both nationwide and in South Carolina. More than 70.9 million people around the U.S. are expected to travel 50 miles or more away from home.

“The summer travel season is off to a hot start, and we expect to set new travel records on the road and in the sky during the week of Independence Day,” said Debbie Haas, Vice President of Travel for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “There will be 3.5 million more travelers than last year.  That means even more people at airports and popular attractions like beaches, lakes, and theme parks.”

Independence Day Holiday Travel Period

AAA’s Independence Day travel forecast measures domestic trips of 50 miles or more during a 9-day period from Saturday, June 29 to Sunday, July 7.

Economic trends influencing the travel forecast

Despite concerns about inflation, total travel is increasing on growth in consumer confidence, wages, and continued strength in consumer spending.

  • Consumers are expected to increase spending by 5.5% compared to a year ago.
  • Real GDP growth will remain modest, rising by 2.5% from last year.
  • After falling steadily since January, consumer confidence moved up in May.
  • Gas prices for May averaged $2.86, $0.23 lower than a year ago.

Road Travel

AAA projects a record 60.6 million people will travel by car over Independence Day week – that’s an additional 2.8 million travelers compared to last year. This year’s number also surpasses 2019 when 55.3 million people traveled by car over July 4th week.

“Road travelers should prepare for congestion in the afternoon and evening hours, particularly near larger metro areas, theme parks and popular attractions,” said Tiffany Wright, spokesperson, AAA – The Auto Club Group in the Carolinas. “With so many people on the road it’s important to be patient, minimize distractions while driving, and move over for people on the roadside.”

Gas Prices

South Carolina drivers are currently paying more on gasoline than they did last Independence Day, when the state average was $3.09. Gas prices have been moving lower as of late. However, that downward trend could reverse course if oil prices rise because of geopolitical tensions or a hurricane that threatens oil rigs and refineries along the Gulf of Mexico.

Air Travel

The number of domestic air travelers is also expected to set a record. Nationally, AAA projects 5.74 million people will fly to their July 4th destinations. That’s an increase of nearly 7% compared to last year and a 12% increase over 2019.

AAA booking data shows domestic airfare is 2% cheaper this Independence Day week compared to last year, and the average price for a domestic roundtrip ticket is $800. Airports will be packed throughout the week. AAA recommends arriving 2 hours early, reserving parking ahead of time, and traveling with carry-on luggage versus checked bags to save time and money.

Other Modes of Transportation

More than 4.6 million people are expected to travel by other modes of transportation, including buses, cruises, and trains. This category is seeing an increase of 9% compared to last year, but this year’s number is shy of 2019’s figure of 4.79 million.

“Cruising continues experiencing remarkable growth,” Haas said. “This time of year, Alaska cruises are in high demand, making Seattle and Anchorage top domestic destinations. Cruise travelers are also finding deals this summer. With new ships coming onto the market – and going for a premium – working with a Travel Advisor is a great way to ensure you’re getting the best value for your vacation. Travel Advisors are also able to help you choose a travel insurance policy that protects you and your investment for the impact of unexpected events before and during your trip.”

Best and Worst Times to Drive and Peak Congestion by Metro

INRIX, a provider of transportation data and insights, says the worst times to travel by car before and on July 4th are between 2pm and 7pm. Drivers should hit the road in the morning, and travelers returning on Monday, July 8th should avoid rush hour traffic in the morning and afternoon.

“Drivers in large metro areas can expect the worst traffic delays on Wednesday, July 3rd, as they leave town, and Sunday, July 7th, as they return,” said Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX. “Road trips over the holiday week could take up to 67% longer than normal. Travelers should monitor 511 services, local news stations, and traffic apps for up-to-the-minute road conditions.”

Please note that the times listed below are for the time zone in which the metro is located.

Family Road Trip Checklist

With road trips expected to set a new record this July 4th week, AAA teamed up with Chicco to share safety tips for families with small children.

  • Check car seat fit. Before you hit the road, check your child’s weight and height to ensure they’re in the right seat and mode of use – especially when it comes to transitioning from rear to forward-facing. Children should remain rear-facing as long as possible for better protection of their head, neck, and spine in the event of a crash. If you are unsure which car seat is best for your child, Chicco offers a car seat comparison guide.
  • Double check car seat installation. Even if your car seat is already installed in the car, it’s worth checking everything is safe and secure. An easy at-home way to do this is with the “inch test.” Simply grab the seat at the car seat belt path and pull side to side and front to back. If it moves more than one inch in any direction, uninstall and start over until a secure fit is achieved. For any questions, utilize the car seat manual, QR codes, or online resources like those offered by Chicco.
  • Secure loose items in the car. Take time to organize and clean up your car before hitting the road. Storage organizers that secure to the back of the driver and passenger seats are simple solutions to make sure everything has a spot, especially loose items that can become projectiles in case of a sudden stop.
  • Be prepared for the unexpected. Pack an emergency kit with first-aid supplies, water, snacks, blankets, jumper cables, and flares. Make sure your phone is fully charged – and keep a charger in the car – to call AAA or request roadside assistance digitally if your battery dies, you lock yourself out, or you need a tow.
  • Map your route. Families with young children should plan for frequent and longer stops along the way. Map out your route ahead of time with AAA TripTik and browse hotels, restaurants, and other activities along the way on AAA Trip Canvas.
  • Bring entertainment. Make sure to place toys and books within reach to keep children entertained. If your kids use tablets or other electronics, make sure the devices are fully charged and pre-downloaded before leaving home. Another fun way to get the whole family excited for the road trip is to create a family playlist of everyone’s favorite songs!

Holiday Forecast Methodology

Travel Forecast

In cooperation with AAA, S&P Global Market Intelligence (SPGMI) developed a unique methodology to forecast actual domestic travel volumes. The economic variables used to forecast travel for the current holiday are leveraged from SPGMI’s proprietary databases. These data include macroeconomic drivers such as employment, output, household net worth, asset prices, including stock indices, interest rates, housing market indicators, and variables related to travel and tourism, including gasoline prices, airline travel, and hotel stays. AAA and SPGMI have quantified holiday travel volumes going back to 2000.

Historical travel volume estimates come from DK SHIFFLET’s TRAVEL PERFORMANCE/MonitorSM. The PERFORMANCE/MonitorSM is a comprehensive study measuring the travel behavior of U.S. residents. DK SHIFFLET contacts over 50,000 U.S. households each month to obtain detailed travel data, resulting in the unique ability to estimate visitor volume and spending, identify trends, and forecast U.S. travel behavior, all after the trips have been taken.

The travel forecast is reported in person-trips. In particular, AAA and SPGMI forecast the total U.S. holiday travel volume and expected mode of transportation. The travel forecast presented in this report was prepared the week of May 27, 2024.

Because AAA forecasts focus on domestic leisure travel only, comparisons to TSA passenger screening numbers should not be made. TSA data includes all passengers traveling on both domestic and international routes. Additionally, TSA screens passengers each time they enter secured areas of the airport, therefore each one-way trip is counted as a passenger tally. AAA focuses on person-trips, which include the full round-trip travel itinerary. As a result, direct comparisons of AAA forecast volumes and daily TSA screenings represent different factors.

*Independence Day Holiday Travel Period

For this forecast, the Independence Day holiday travel period is defined as the nine-day period from Saturday, June 29 to Sunday, July 7. Historically, the Independence Day holiday period included only one weekend. This is the first year the Independence Day holiday travel period is a longer timeframe with two weekends included.

South Carolina among best states for house flippers 2024

0

A new study reveals South Carolina among the best states for house flippers, by calculating the most important expenses for flipping houses.

Arizona is the best state for house flippers, considering its remodeling prices, high sales rate, and a return of investment of 20%.

Colorado and Florida are both the second best states with Colorado offering less sales for more money, and Florida more sales for less money.

James McAllister, a spokesperson from Highland Cabinetry commented on the study: “Choosing the best state is based on preference. It’s important to realize that the average sales price is dependent on the investment house flippers make. This means that lower remodeling prices are good for house buyers and sellers.”

  • Highland Cabinetry conducted research and revealed the best states for flipping houses. The remodeling prices (including the most expensive, the cheapest and average remodeling price ), sales rate and price was taken into account for each state. Then, these numbers were analyzed and put into a scoring system.

Here is a short summary.

The best state to flip houses in is Arizona, with a composite score of 72. Its affordable remodeling price of $64,194 is over $3000 less than the national average. Its sales rate of 76.8 per capita is among the top 2 states, and offers a good potential return on investment, with a sales price of around $429,000.

Florida and Colorado share second place, with a composite score of 69.6. Florida’s remodeling price is around $5,300 lower than Colorado. Colorado has a lower sales rate of 58.5, compared to Florida’s 73.6, but the average sale price of $548,602 in Colorado is way higher than Florida’s. There’s around a 120 thousand dollar difference between the two states.

Hawaii takes third place, with a composite score of 69.  It has the highest average house sale price of $856,327 out of all the 50 states. Considering its average remodeling price of $82,466, there is a high potential for return on investment. It offers a sales rate of 26.2, but its high sale price compensates for the profit.

Idaho takes fourth place with a score of 68.3.  The gap between the cheapest ($59,584) and most expensive ($60,531)  remodeling is small, making it a great state for remodeling on a budget. It’s one of the few states that offers renovations below $60,000.

North Carolina takes the fifth spot, with a composite score of 68. It has a higher sales rate of 75.7, compared to Idaho’s 64.5, but a lower sales price ($328,181). It’s a great state for starters in the house flipping business, because it’s easier to find cheap houses to renovate. It offers substantial profits for beginners.

California’s taking the sixth place, with a score of 67.8. After Hawaii, California’s average sale price of $782,695 is the highest out of all 50 states. Renovation can sometimes pass the 90 thousand dollar mark, but considering its potential return on investment, it’s worth it to flip houses there.

South Carolina takes the seventh place. It has a composite score of 67.3. Out of all the 50 states, it has the highest sales rate of 77.3 per capita. It has an average sales price of $292,948, making it the only state on this list to have a price below $300 thousand. This state is also great for beginners, because they can find cheaper houses, repair them for a below average price ($62,461).

Washington is the eighth best place for flipping houses. Its sales rate is the closest one to the national average. It offers a high sales price of $588,986, and considering its repair prices ($72,053), it has a lot of potential profit for house flippers.

Tennessee takes the last place on this list, with a score of 66.4. It offers a high sales rate of 72,5, and a low renovation price of $60,755. When you couple that with a low sales price of $316,473, it becomes another good state for people new to house flipping. Tennessee has cheap renovation and cheap houses, at a high rate.

James McAllister, a spokesperson from Highland Cabinetry commented on the study: “Choosing the best state is based on preference. It’s important to realize that the average sales price is dependent on the investment house flippers make. This means that lower remodeling prices are good for house buyers and sellers.

Methodology: Highland Cabinetry did research on all the 50 states, by finding out the most common expenses when it comes to house flipping. After getting a price range for remodeling, an average was calculated. Along with those numbers, the sales rate and the sales price was put in a formula to create a composite score system.

Education Outreach, driven by Mercedes-Benz Vans Charleston, brings STEM curriculum-based education programs into classrooms

CHARLESTON, S.C. — Traveling on the roads connecting the regions of South Carolina, you may spot a new van donning Aquarium waves and excited educators inside. Thanks to Mercedes-Benz Vans Charleston, South Carolina Aquarium Education Outreach has a new eSprinter to bring the wonder of water, wildlife and wild places to communities near and far.

Education Outreach, driven by Mercedes-Benz Vans Charleston, brings STEM curriculum-based education programs into classrooms, libraries and more statewide. Program participants have opportunities for hands-on animal interactions — like touching a sea star, feeling the spines of a sea urchin or seeing a hermit crab emerge from a shell — paired with an exciting science lesson.

Last week, the Aquarium took their new eSprinter on its inaugural journey to bring outreach programs to several elementary school classrooms in celebration of World Ocean Month.

“Having the opportunity to bring the Aquarium into classrooms across the state is so fulfilling,” says Meghan Galipeau, education outreach coordinator at the South Carolina Aquarium. “Seeing students of all ages beam with excitement to meet an animal up-close and witnessing firsthand their curiosity about the natural world intensify is the reason we have Education Outreach. We don’t want location to limit someone’s access to water, wildlife and wild places. It’s my hope that these experiences inspire students to become the next generation of environmental stewards.”

Mercedez-Benz Vans Charleston has been a longstanding Aquarium partner, having given generous contributions to support their work in sea turtle conservation and education programming. With their recent gift of this all-electric eSprinter — one of the first of its kind in the nation — the Aquarium has a transportation method for a cornerstone education program that keeps the environment top of mind as well.

Myrtle Beach Man, Serial Bank Robber Sentenced to 10 Years in Federal Prison

FLORENCE, S.C. — John Henry Stack, 76, of Myrtle Beach, was sentenced to 120 months in federal prison after being convicted of committing a 2023 bank robbery. At the time of the 2023 robbery, Stack was on supervised release from previous federal bank robbery convictions.

Evidence presented by the Government at a two-day jury trial in March established that around midday on March 10, 2023, Stack entered the Anderson Brothers Bank in Aynor wearing a blue medical scrub shirt over a black jacket, a winter hat, sunglasses, and a medical-style mask.  Stack placed a pillowcase on the teller’s counter and pulled a long-handled lighter from his pocket.  Stack concealed the lighter under his hand to look like a gun, pointed it at the teller, and demanded money. The teller placed $2,130 in cash in the pillowcase, and Stack took the money and left the bank.

Following the robbery, local, state, and federal law enforcement worked together to identify and apprehend the suspect. Law enforcement identified the vehicle the robber drove to and from the robbery as a Ford Focus with significant passenger side damage; Stack had recently purchased the Focus.  About 10 p.m. on March 10, an officer with Myrtle Beach Police Department stopped the Focus driven by Stack. On the rearview mirror of the Focus was hang tag for a nearby hotel.  Hotel records showed Stack had rented a room that afternoon and paid in cash.

Law enforcement searched the Focus and the hotel room and found clothing consistent with that worn by Stack during the robbery, including a blue medical scrub shirt, pillowcases like the one Stack placed on the teller’s counter, a bag that contained Stack’s medications and $765 in cash, and a red long-handled lighter.

Following the traffic stop, Stack confessed to law enforcement that he robbed the bank. He detailed for them how he robbed the bank, what he wore while robbing the bank, and explained that he concealed the lighter under his hand to make it look like a gun and “fake out” the teller, so that she would hand over the money.

Stack previously served time in federal prison for multiple bank robberies in South Carolina and North Carolina. He was released in 2022.

“Even after a significant sentence for the same crime, Mr. Stack continued to threaten the safety of the community by committing another bank robbery,” said Adair F. Boroughs, U.S. Attorney for the District of South Carolina.  “We commend the work of Aynor and Myrtle Beach Police Departments in responding to this incident and the assistance of SLED and the FBI Columbia Field Office to bring this defendant to justice.”

“Stack’s actions put innocent lives in harm’s way,” said Steve Jensen, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Columbia Field Office. “This sentence reflects the weight of the crime and should serve as a reminder that such criminal behavior will be met by swift justice. The FBI, along with our local, state, and federal partners, reaffirm our commitment to maintaining public safety and upholding the rule of law.”

“South Carolina local and state law enforcement agencies and our federal team members continuously show how we work together to make a difference within our communities,” Chief Prock said. “From start to finish this is what we do to help. We care, we are focused, and we will continue to work to ensure that those that endanger the lives and take advantage of our community members, will be held accountable. This case is a perfect example of how communication and partnerships work hand and hand.”

Senior United States District Judge Cameron McGowan Currie presided over the trial and sentenced Stack to 120 months in prison, to be followed by a three-year term of court-ordered supervision.  There is no parole in the federal system.  As part of the sentence, the Court also ordered Stack to pay $2,130 in restitution – the amount he stole from the bank.  In imposing the sentence, the Court noted that Stack violated the Court’s trust by committing a new bank robbery while on supervised release.

The case was investigated by Aynor Police Department, Myrtle Beach Police Department, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, and the FBI Columbia Field Office. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Katherine Flynn and Lauren Hummel prosecuted the case.
