NMB Fire Division Chief Charles Full passes

0

A medical emergency led to the sudden death of NMB Fire Division Chief Charles Full. Below is a statement from Fire Chief Billy Floyd.

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — A Message from Fire Chief Billy Floyd:

“It is with a broken heart and heavy sorrow that I announce the sudden passing of Division Chief Charles Full early Thursday afternoon, June 13, following a medical emergency at his home.

Division Chief Full started with our Department in February 2007 as a Firefighter/EMT. In November 2008, he was promoted to Fire Lieutenant and served in that role until his promotion to Division Chief of Fire Training in July of 2021.

Prior to working for our Department, Lt Full served as a Deputy District Fire Warden for the New Jersey Forest Fire Service.

Division Chief Full is survived by his wife Amy and their two children.

We want to extend our sincere gratitude to Horry County Fire Rescue, Horry County Police, Conway Fire Rescue, Horry County 911, and the Horry County Coroner’s Office for all their assistance and support throughout today.

We greatly appreciate the outpouring of love and support we are already receiving from the numerous Fire Chiefs who have offered any assistance they can provide.

We will provide further information regarding services once they are finalized.

We did not just lose a member of our Department today, we lost a friend and brother to us all.

We ask you continue to keep the Full family and our North Myrtle Beach Fire family in your prayers.”

Woman tragically killed by HCPD Beach Patrol

A woman was tragically killed by a HCPD Beach Patrol truck on Nash Street yesterday. Nash Street in Myrtle Beach is where many locals go as it features free parking.

The police vehicle, a 2020 Ford Ranger Pickup truck, was driving northbound from Nash Street when it hit the woman, who was facing east. The woman was taken to Grand Strand Regional Hospital where she died.

Horry County Deputy Coroner Michelle McSpadden said 66-year-old Sandra “Sandy” Schultz-Peters died as a result of the incident. McSpadden added that Schultz-Peters lived in Myrtle Beach.

A person on Nash Street, Dennis Miller, said bystanders immediately tried to help.

The only way to describe this incident is a tragedy. Certainly, the driver of the HCPD Beach Patrol unit had no intentions of harming this unfortunate woman. Civil lawsuits are sure to follow.

MyrtleBeachSC News mourns with the family.

As such, we will be showing no graphic photos nor any up to the minute follow ups.

HCPD Beach Patrol

Our community and this family is in a time of mourning.

Nash Street is located beside Springmaid Pier. Springmaid Pier is east of Market Common in Myrtle Beach.

The street has been in the news multiple times for everything from a body being found washed up, to whales washing up, to a Chinese Spy Balloon that was shot down.

The area is just North of Myrtle Beach State Park. Myrtle Beach State Park is also popular among locals because the annual passes issued there are cheaper than parking downtown in the City of Myrtle Beach.

Myrtle Beach State Park and Springmaid Beach are considered safer areas to visit than downtown Myrtle Beach, as well.

Tragically, the HCPD Beach Patrol tragedy is a detriment to the area, Horry County Police, the victims family, and our entire community.

SC Voters reject 3 women who blocked pro life legislation

Earlier this year, no more than three Republican women in the Senate were able to defeat a near-total pro life bill in South Carolina, but two lost and one is now heading for a runoff in their elections after Tuesday’s primary.

After joining with Democratic women to defeat the measure, the senators – who won the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage award for people who risk their careers for the greater good – suffered two losses and a runoff, arguing that S.C.’s pro life legislation went too far.

In 2012, there were only men in the Senate, and there will be no Republican woman in the chamber in 2025. There are just two Democratic women.

“This is a slap in the face for women,” said Lexington County Sen. Katrina Shealy, who is preparing for a runoff. “Republican women lose like this over one issue when we fought so hard for other issues.”

S.C. voters clearly believed it was an important issue.

A bucking of the tide

Despite a trend of second thoughts about more restrictive abortion laws, voters on Tuesday rejected them.

In statewide polls, a near-total ban does not have wide support. However, turnout was low and races were in Republican districts, where experts say voters are more passionate about abortion.

When cardiac activity is detected around six weeks after conception, the state eventually implements a ban.

It’s easier to fight mini battles than to fight a whole statewide war, said Dave Wilson, who worked with abortion opponents groups. In mini battles, voters can turn around and say they aren’t happy with the stance you took and the way you went about it. It doesn’t take a lot of them.

Races

In her sole opponent’s view, Allen Blackman, who believes life begins at conception, but he feels abortion wasn’t the only reason Penry Gustafson lost. In a newly redrawn district, Gustafson received less than 20% of the vote, even though her base no longer included her, and constituents complained she didn’t solve their problems.

In South Carolina, a recount is rarely enough to alter a race by more than a few votes, since Senn lost by 31 votes to state Rep. Matt Leber. The race was fraught with accusations. She posted signs with Leber’s mugshot, which he said amounted to inflated accusations that never led to convictions.

In Leber’s attacks, Senn’s record was misconstrued and photographs were manipulated to make her look like the Joker from DC Comics.

Senn’s redrawn Charleston district includes more conservatives, which may have hurt her as well.

Senn said she wouldn’t talk about the race until the recount is complete later this week. Neither woman mentioned abortion in their statements Wednesday.

Runoff for Shealy

There was only one Republican woman to survive the night, but she only received 40% of the vote. She will face attorney Carlisle Kennedy in the runoff on June 25.

The Lexington County district that led the charge to flip the state from Democratic to Republican control over the past five decades was covered with billboards saying Shealy wasn’t “pro-life”.

As for the runoff, Shealy said she will likely change tactics, even if that alienates people uncomfortable when a woman raises her voice or takes a stand.

The South Carolina Senate was all-male for four years when Shealy was elected in 2012, and rarely had more than one woman in the chamber. If she loses, the Senate may have only two women, both Democrats, in 2025.

Therefore, the perspective of these three women can be lost, and issues such as abortion for all may find a home in some blue state up north.

“We needed someone to take care of children, families, veterans, and old people,” Shealy said. “All these people no one was taking care of. I came in there and gave them a voice.”

The voters rejected her pro-abortion voice on Tuesday.

Avianca Airlines: Tackling the Illegal Wildlife Trade

In commemoration of World Environment Day, Avianca and WCS announced the extension of their alliance in Colombia to include Ecuador, featuring a new commemorative design on one of the airline’s planes with the message: “Together for Biodiversity.”

BOGOTÁ, June 11, 2023 – As part of the agreement signed in June 2023 between Avianca and Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), these two organizations have significantly advanced their joint efforts to combat wildlife trafficking and promote biodiversity conservation. This agreement supports Avianca’s implementation of international commitments to prevent wildlife trafficking, such as the 2016 Buckingham Palace Declaration.

Wildlife trafficking represents a severe threat to global biodiversity. Especially in biodiverse countries like Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Brazil, and Bolivia—where vast, difficult-to-monitor areas facilitate illegal extraction and transportation of wildlife—wildlife trafficking threatens priority species in the region such as jaguars, tortoises, freshwater turtles, amphibians, and macaws. According to official data on wildlife confiscations in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia for the period from 2010 to 2018, nearly 60,000 confiscation events were documented. These events represented more than 900 species of birds, mammals, amphibians, and reptiles. From 2010 to 2018, more than 28,000 live individuals were confiscated at major airports in the above-mentioned countries.

To date, and within the framework of the Together for Conservation project, an alliance with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and WCS aimed at strengthening civil society organizations to prevent environmental crimes, Avianca’s internal policies in Colombia have been reviewed to improve the detection and reporting of wildlife trafficking cases to the relevant authorities. Additionally, staff has been trained on the company’s commitments and policies against wildlife trafficking, as well as on detecting and preventing this crime. WCS and Avianca have also promoted communication activities to highlight the importance of wildlife conservation.

As a result of this successful collaboration and in commemoration of World Environment Day, Avianca and WCS announced the extension of their alliance to Ecuador, with a new commemorative design on one of the airline’s planes, carrying the message: “United for Biodiversity.” This reaffirms their joint commitment to the protection and conservation of species and ecosystems in Latin America. The aircraft with this design was presented during the launch of Avianca’s 2023 Sustainability Report, led by Federico Pedreira, CEO of Avianca.

For José Luis Gómez, Regional WCS Regional Director, the collaboration with the private sector is essential to achieve tangible results and scale the impact of WCS’s actions for wildlife protection. “Our alliance with Avianca is a critical step in disrupting the pernicious trafficking that is devastating wildlife populations in Latin America,” emphasizes Gomez.

Felipe Andrés Gómez Vivas, Director of Institutional Relations and Sustainability at Avianca, noted, “We want to spread the message of our commitment to wildlife throughout the Americas because we seek to raise awareness within our target public on the importance of protecting biodiversity. Our alliance with WCS has allowed us to train about 20 employees to become protectors of our species.”

Said Dino Delgado, USAID/Amazon Regional Environmental Governance Team Leader, “By working with strategic private stakeholders, we aim to reduce the enabling environments that facilitate the supply, transportation, and demand for unsustainable and illegal Amazon goods and services. USAID strives to support a healthy and resilient Amazon basin that is valued by society, ensures human well-being, and safeguards our global climate.”

Through this alliance, WCS will continue working with Avianca on the review and strengthening of internal processes for detecting potential cases of wildlife trafficking and the training of teams in the prevention and handling of this crime within the airline’s operations at a regional level.

The man behind S.C. politics has curious night

Walter Whetsell, of Starboard Communications Political Consultants, is clearly the most powerful man in S.C. Politics.

He is the consultant for the entire S.C. House Republican Party. He also represents Nikki Haley, Myrtle Beach Mayor Brenda Bethune, the Mayor of Charleston, S.C., and a who’s who name of State Representatives and State Senators in S.C.

His PAC, The Palmetto Truth Project, poured millions of dollars into Tuesday’s primary elections. The PAC’s desire was to completely eliminate the S.C. Freedom Caucus in the state. The goal was to replace this group with more left leaning candidates.

Here is a scorecard on how well Walter Whetsell performed yesterday.

Whetsell swept Horry County with his more liberal leaning incumbents of District 61 Rep. Carla Schuessler and District 106 Representative Lawyer Val Guest. Most other left leaning Republican candidates in the county ran unopposed.

The Upstate Scorecard went poorly for Walter Whetsell and his Palmetto Truth Project.

Having brewed for two plus years, the battle between the state House GOP Caucus, with PAC ad buys from the Palmetto Truth Project, and the S.C. Freedom Caucus played out in 32 districts. The Freedom Caucus clearly won.

Jay West, R-Anderson, who serves as assistant majority leader, lost to Lee Gilreath, a Freedom Caucus-allied candidate in Upstate House District 7. Powerful, long standing Representative William E. “Bill” Sandifer III lost to Freedom Caucus candidate Adam Duncan in Upstate House District 2.

Representative “Bill” Sandifer III has been a member of the House Labor, Commerce, and Industry Committee since 1995 and serves as its chairman. That all ended yesterday.

In House District 34, currently represented by state Rep. Roger Nutt, R-Spartanburg, who chose to run for state Senate, Freedom Caucus aligned candidate Sarita Edgerton won the primary with 40.43 percent. With 33.76 percent of the vote, GOP aligned Joanne LaBounty came in second.

Over $3 million spent in ad buys

Between the Palmetto Truth Project and the S.C. Freedom Caucus, over an estimated $3 million was spent in ad buys. In what was among the lowest turnout in S.C. voting history, only a handful of seats turned over.

For Walter Whetsell and the Palmetto Truth Project, South Carolina’s conservative upstate proved to be untouchable.

For the Freedom Caucus, the more liberal leaning Horry County candidates could not be taken from their perch.

The night was largely a stalemate. However, the Freedom Caucus scored the signature wins.

BIGGEST NEWS OF THE NIGHT

While the drama between these two played out, the biggest news of the night was the ouster of Democrat power player, Dick Harpootlian.

Harpootlian has been a long standing ally of Senator Luke Rankin, and a friend to Horry County’s RINO coast.

His previous positions include solicitor (district attorney) for the Fifth Judicial Circuit of South Carolina from 1991 to 1995, and chair of the South Carolina Democratic Party from 1998 to 2003.

Harpootlian famously represented murderer Alex Murdaugh who was convicted of killing his wife and son. It was Murdaugh who helped S.C. Horry Senator Luke Rankin become S.C. Judiciary Chair.

Rankin beat his opponent Autry Benton by 10 points in yesterday’s primary.
